**Meet the Man Who Built a Luxury 4x4 Camper—With a Toilet, Solar Panels & Surfboard Rack!**
Meet Matt, the fearless tinkerer behind *The Traveling Together Journal*, and welcome to Part 1 of a seriously epic DIY adventure. His mission? Turn an everyday 4x4 truck into an off-road camper palace—complete with a pop-up roof, queen bed, solar power, and yes... an indoor toilet. Because let’s be honest—camping shouldn’t mean sacrificing the throne.
Matt starts strong with a beefy subframe welded into existence, painted with Rustlok like it’s SPF 50. Then comes the floor: a layered masterpiece of foam, fiberglass, and plywood so overbuilt it could probably survive a meteor strike. He crafts lap joints like a woodworking wizard and secures everything with screws that could make a Viking weep.
The walls? A weatherproof fortress made of 5mm plywood, Douglas fir, and foam insulation, all wrapped in epoxy and fiberglass. Add in a pop-top roof on drawer slides and gas struts (hello, smooth lift!), and this thing is part transformer, part tiny home. Three handcrafted doors—including a surfboard hatch—are built with precision and just the right amount of MacGyver energy using scrap aluminum for latches.
Then it’s time for the bling: solar power. Matt runs wiring through the truck like a mad scientist, connecting a 200Ah lithium battery to a 400-watt solar array via a Renogy DC-DC charger. He adds a sink, faucet, drawers built from leftovers, and a securely mounted stove. Oh, and did we mention the throne? He custom-fits a toilet because nobody wants a potty panic on the trail.
Finally, a custom awning and steel surfboard rack wrap up the build. With his partner Amie and their dog Jaeger by his side, Matt’s rolling out in a truck that’s more comfortable than most apartments.
