Man Builds a Wooden Go-Kart That Hits 40 MPH! (Start to Finish by @EricLindberg )

The project follows the impressive transformation of carefully prepared **soft maple lumber into a fully functional wooden go-kart**. The builder makes the project accessible by providing free plans, templates, and a materials list, while demonstrating that only basic tools are needed.
The maple boards are milled, planed, and cut into precise components for the frame and steering column. Careful measurements and angled cuts are essential because, as the builder demonstrates, “close enough” isn't exactly a great philosophy when you're building something that needs to steer correctly.
Before assembly, holes are drilled for the engine mount, cables, seat, and steering column. Metal brackets for the brake, live axle, pedals, and front spindles are fabricated, drilled, cleaned, painted, and then accurately transferred onto the wooden frame.
The steering column is constructed using a strong half-lap joint, while the entire frame is assembled with glue and countersunk screws. The screw heads are hidden with wooden plugs, creating a clean appearance. The plywood platform is prepared for the seat and engine, everything is sanded smooth, and the maple receives a protective polyurethane finish.
Next comes the mechanical transformation. The steering shaft, pillow blocks, spindle brackets, tie rods, wheels, and steering hub are installed and carefully aligned. The rear axle assembly follows, including the brake components, locking collars, sprocket, keystock, and rear wheels. The engine is then mounted on a riser plate, aligned with the rear sprocket, and the chain is sized accordingly.
The final stage focuses on the pedals, brake and throttle cables, and drivetrain. Return springs provide proper pedal movement, while the cables are routed neatly away from the torque converter. The chain is secured with its master link, the sprocket and axle collars are locked, and the engine mounts are finally torqued down.
After all that woodworking, metal fabrication, mechanical assembly, and careful alignment, the result is an incredibly creative **wooden go-kart capable of reaching 40 MPH**. The builder deserves serious credit for turning ordinary materials into such a functional and entertaining machine.
