If you’ve ever tried to clamp a picture frame together, you know it’s not as simple as grabbing a handful of f-clamps. The angled edges create an inclined plane that makes it difficult to clamp. Today, I’ll show you how to make two simple and effective miter clamping aids out of scrap plywood.
We start with a piece of plywood as the base. Cut a three-quarter inch groove along the length and add a four-inch piece of stock into the groove. The rectangle stock will have a hole and a gap to allow a t-bolt to be flush to the surface. Next, add two strips of wood on either side of the groove to create a track wide enough for the thickness of a t-bolt.
On one end of the base, attach a fixed block of wood. On the opposite, install a block that the t-bolt threads through.
Now place parallel sides of the frame on top of the aid, press the moveable block to hold the side snugly, and lock each down with knobs. We'll switch to the perpendicular pieces and slide them into position. Add glue to the corners, and finish with a couple of clamps to bring everything together. This setup saves you money and hassle, avoiding pricey, cumbersome corner clamps.
