UN HRC Session. Oral address to Norway to remind it about the GA resolution on the protection of the human rights defenders
Honorable Mr President,
We thank you for giving us the floor.
International Action for Peace and Development in Great Lakes regrets Norway’s failure to respect and follow procedures when initiating and implementing an investigation into Global Network for Rights and Development (GNRD), International NGO duly registered in Norway and working in human rights issues.
Therefore, International Action for Peace and Development in Great Lakes, would like to address Norway to remind it about the General Assembly resolution on the protection of the human rights defenders proposed by Norway and accepted by consensus on 21 March 2013. The resolution expresses grave concern that, in some instances, national security and counter-terrorism legislation and other measures, such as laws regulating civil society organizations, have been misused to target human rights defenders or have hindered their work and endangered their safety in a manner contrary to international law.
We strongly believe that Norway as one of the leading countries in the human rights protection and promotion will reconsider and amend its procedures used for the NGOs working in human rights, and adhere to the Resolution it correctly and creditably proposed in 2013.
As a special concern in the GNRD’s case, the International Action for Peace and Development in Great Lakes, condemns the Norwegian police actions of interviewing an underage individual of 11 years (daughter of the GNRD President, Dr. Loai Deeb) in disregard of its own legal obligations and rules of conduct and without obtaining consent from the parents of the child. This type of abhorrent violation of a child’s rights from the Norwegian authorities is to be condemned as it’s unworthy of the noble principles upon which the Norwegian state is based. Thus, we urge Norway to adhere to the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Thank you, Mr. President.
