MINI is celebrating 25 years of modern design, revealing how one of the world's most recognizable small cars evolved without abandoning the character of the original.
From the Classic Mini of 1959 to today's MINI Cooper Electric, this is the story of how an automotive icon was reinvented for a completely different generation.
When the BMW Group took on the challenge of developing a new MINI, designers had to preserve the compact proportions, short overhangs, round headlights and playful personality that made the original famous. Instead of simply creating a retro copy, the goal was to build a new MINI capable of developing an identity of its own.
The modern MINI arrived in 2001 and gradually established new design signatures that enthusiasts now associate with the brand. Personalization, premium details, distinctive styling and the famous go kart driving character helped transform MINI into much more than a modern interpretation of the original.
Now MINI is entering another major transition. The latest MINI Cooper Electric introduces the brand's Charismatic Simplicity design philosophy with cleaner exterior surfaces, a simplified interior, a round Central Display and a renewed focus on clever packaging.
The technology may be completely different from what Sir Alec Issigonis imagined in 1959, but the fundamental idea remains surprisingly familiar: keep it compact, functional, fun and unmistakably MINI.
