The 2026 BYD Seal U DM-i is a mid-size plug-in hybrid SUV from the company that has just taken the global EV crown: BYD sold 2.26 million battery-electric cars in 2025 against Tesla's 1.64 million, the first year it has finished ahead. The plug-in hybrid SUV an American does buy is the 2026 Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid: from $41,500 MSRP, or $42,950 with the $1,450 destination charge, 324 hp with standard all-wheel drive, an EPA-estimated 52 miles of electric range and 102 MPGe combined. The BYD's Comfort trim is rated 125 km, close to 80 miles, on Europe's WLTP cycle. Those are two different test regimes and WLTP runs the more generous of the two, so treat it as more electric range on a friendlier yardstick rather than a straight 80 versus 52.
