Situated on a shallow gulf along the northeastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea, Tunis is the vibrant capital and largest city of Tunisia, serving as the country’s ultimate economic, cultural, and political hub. The city layout beautifully mirrors its layered history; its historic core, the Medina, is a UNESCO World Heritage site filled with narrow alleyways and 8th-century Islamic architecture, which directly contrasts with the Ville Nouvelle, a modern district built during French colonial rule featuring wide, tree-lined boulevards.
Population: The city proper houses approximately 693,000 residents, while its expansive metropolitan area swells to over 2.8 million people.
Geography: Tunis spans an urban area of roughly 212 square kilometres (82 sq mi) and sits at a low average elevation of just 4 meters (13 feet) above sea level, bordered by the 37-square-kilometer Lake of Tunis.
Economy: It operates as Tunisia's industrial heart, driving sectors like textiles, carpets, olive oil processing, and tourism, while sitting right next door to the historical ancient ruins of Carthage.
