Welcome to our first impressions inside the nation of Oman, known to be one of the most peaceful and safe nations in the world 🇴🇲 This is the capital Muscat.
This is our first impressions and we have come to the most touristy areas to explore to see what the capital has to offer. Without waiting, we went straight into a store on the promenade and Pablo bought a traditional Kumma worn by Omani men on the head, and a traditional thobe. Now Pablo really does fit in and look like a true Omani man.
We kept on exploring until we arrived to the famous souq to have a walk in, enjoy air con and see what was being sold. Everyone was friendly and mostly selling souvenirs alongside some cool pieces of art and ornaments. This souq was once famous for silverware and frankincense. We roamed the streets to see what we could find until above us lay an old Portuguese fort used in the 17th century to defend against raising Ottoman Empire forces on the gulf. Now it’s a tourist attraction and you can even go up, but by this point we were tired and decided to leave it but the view from below was still nice.
What you will notice about Muscat and Oman in general is how the buildings are all low and there is almost no “modern side”. This is because the country wants to maintain the culture and past heritage and history of the nation. Well this is the case where we are today, everything looks so unique to what other countries we have experienced before.
After a quick taxi up the gulf coast, we arrived to the Palace of the Sultan of Oman, where before we walked up to it, was a long, clean, traditional and royal pedestrian path that looked amazing. Google said we would see Royal Guards outside but when we arrived at the gates, we didn’t see any.
We needed a nice drink after all this exploring and we wanted to see if we could try traditional Omani coffee and dates, and that’s exactly what we found. A small cafe where we enjoyed a comfortable sit down in air con and tried this traditional delicacy for the first time…….🇴🇲
