Innerspace is a 1987 American science fiction comedy film directed by Joe Dante and produced by Michael Finnell. Steven Spielberg served as executive producer. It was inspired by the 1966 science fiction film Fantastic Voyage.
It stars Dennis Quaid, Martin Short and Meg Ryan, with Robert Picardo and Kevin McCarthy, with music composed by Jerry Goldsmith. It earned $42 million in worldwide theatrical rentals and won an Oscar, the only film directed by Dante to do so.
Plot:
In San Francisco, down-on-his-luck naval aviator Lt. Tuck Pendleton resigns his commission and volunteers for a secret miniaturization experiment. He is placed in a submersible pod and both are shrunk to microscopic size. They are transferred into a syringe to be injected into a rabbit, but the lab is attacked by a rival organization, led by scientist Dr. Margaret Canker, that plans to seize the experiment and steal the miniaturization technology.

Released July 1st of 1987 to a $27,000,000 budget. It did not make money.
This is the only film directed by Joe Dante to win an Academy Award. It won the Best Visual Effects award.
Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan met on the set of the film, and dated from there. The two later married on February 14, 1991, but divorced in 2001.
William Schallert was cast as Jack's doctor as an in-joke since he had played a doctor in The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957).
Joe Dante was the director for Innerspace, he also directed Small Soldiers, Looney Tunes: Back in Action and a small movie called Gremlins.
Ally Sheedy, Molly Ringwald and Demi Moore were also considered to play Lydia Maxwell which went to Meg Ryan.
Mel Gibson , Robin Williams and Rick Moranis was considered to play Jack Putter.
Robert Zemeckis and John Carpenter were attached to direct this film.
