Here's a 1974 Gottlieb Far Out pinball machine in action.
This machine has my favourite backglass artwork of any I've seen. It's bright and whimsical and very far out, man. Love it. The art was done by Gordon Morison, the primary Gottlieb artist throughout the 70's. The game was designed by Ed Krynski.
Gameplay is simple and fun on Far Out. The key to a high score is through building the bonus, but doing so is challenging -- only the lit lanes and targets add to the bonus, so the player has to be fairly strategic to get the bonus into double-digits.
The main criticism of this machine is that the drop targets don't reset upon completion, only between balls. As a result, if the player manages to drop all of the targets in one ball, there is little left to shoot for. This is true, but it's also not something that happens often enough for it to be a real issue, in my humble opinion.
