Next up in the shop is a 1987 Diamond Lady by Gottlieb/Premier. The previous owner designed a custom translite for the machine, in case you were wondering why it looks different from the original.
This is a pretty decent game with some good shots and interesting rules. Of course, it's plagued by the mid-80's Gottlieb problem of horrendous photographic backglass art, but if you're a big fan of the dated 80's look, here you go.
The two spinner shots are pretty satisfying to hit and the ramp in the top left corner is unique and interesting. The three drop target banks are reminiscent of Gottlieb's Volley from 1976. Hitting the drops on the left or right can send the ball to the top drop bank and then into the drops on the opposite side of the playfield. This diamond pattern is pretty groovy when it works and was obviously how the game got it's theme/name.
The sound fits the theme well and it's actually fairly catchy once you get past the cheese. It's surprisingly bass-y. Some of the voice calls are pretty silly, though. The "ooh" and "ahh" that the "lady" says The System80b's from Gottlieb had some decent sound by the point... especially games like TX-Sector and Robo-War.
This machine was designed by Jon Norris and the "artwork" was done by Constantino Mitchell and Jeanine Mitchell.
Anyway... good game, gross art. There you go.
