On 30 January 1972, in the Northern Irish city of Derry/Londonderry, soldiers of the British Army’s Parachute Regiment opened fire on an anti-internment civil rights march, ultimately killing 14 people. The victims were unarmed civilians, and the 2010 Saville Inquiry established that the shootings were “unjustified and unjustifiable”, prompting a formal apology from British Prime Minister David Cameron. Bloody Sunday became a watershed moment in the Troubles, dramatically increasing anger at the British state and fuelling wider support and recruitment for the Provisional IRA.
