MONSTERS OF THE WEEK: THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDCK: A Journey Through Butcher Bay (And The Dark Athena)
In the same year as the historical first person shooter Juggernauts Half-Life 2 and Doom 3, the at-the-time quite unknown Swedish developer studio Starbreeze released one of the best movie-license tie-in video games with The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay, and delivered a just as great sequel with Assault on Dark Athena 5 years later; two games that are exceedingly hard to come by on PC due to being discontinued in digital stores. This video is a close examination of those two games and my personal journey of rediscovery of two amazing FPS/RPG/Stealth/Immersive Sim hybrids from the 2000s.

HOLLOWBODY IS A LOVE LETTER TO PS2-ERA SURVIVAL HORROR

I’ve been excited for Headware Games’ Hollowbody ever since I took note of it, two years ago. After a successful kickstarter campaign in ‘22, the game is now finally about to launch on Steam on September 12th 2024. store.steampowered.com/app/2123640/Hollowbody
I’ve had access to the game a good month before launch and had a fantastic time playing it – a wonderfully loving homage to PS2-era survival horror that felt great to play and oozes atmosphere in a fascinating near-future setting. This is my 20 minute first impressions spoiler-free review that hopefully helps you decide if this game is something you don’t want to miss out on!

#StillWakesTheDeep #TheChineseRoom
When I saw trailers, I was excited for a lovecraftian horror game by Dear Esther makers The Chinese Room set on an oil rig in the 1970s. When I played it I immediately wanted to talk about it. Now, 2 months later, I ended up with this gargantuan beast of a video. Clearly this game woke something in me that was slumbering deep. So buckle up.

Venture to the Vile is a charming and delightfully (and surprisingly) challenging Indie Metroidvania made by the Montreal based developer studio Cut to Bits. I had the opportunity to play it before release (which is today, the day this video launches) and I found myself enjoying my time immensely. This video is a hands-on review in which I share my experiences with it and I hope it helps you get an idea if Venture to the Vile is a game that might be up your alley or not.

CASTLEVANIA II: SIMON’S QUEST RETROSPECTIVE: Why Everyone* Was Wrong About Simon’s Quest
Common Gamer Knowledge: Castlevania is a masterpiece, and Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest is a disgrace of a sequel, a steaming pile of diarrhea dookie farts, and only with Castlevania III, Konami course corrected to make a “proper” sequel. It’s hogwash, and largely the result of the massive influence of early video essayists and YouTube game critics that has invaded and usurped the collective unconscious. Time to talk about Simon’s Quest and how incredibly forward thinking, innovative and trailblazing it really was when it came out in 1987.
* The Asterisk in the title: A *lot* of people were actually right about it. Game Journalists at the time and the player base at large really revered this game for what it was. Until the YouTube Hivemind took hold.

ACONCAGUA: The LOST PS1 CLASSIC THAT COULD NOT BE TRANSLATED
#AconcaguaGame #PlayStation #AconcaguaReview
As we’re going to explore in this video, the game we’re talking about in today’s video is indeed the ultimate “lost in translation” experience – from the history and circumstances surrounding the game itself, all the way down to the ludic systems that govern the moment-to-moment gameplay.
It was firmly intended to be the final, console-defining, large-scale international PlayStation 1 blockbuster before it gave way to the PS2 – but in the last moment, Sony Interactive cut the game’s marketing budget and scrubbed its international release, condemning it to a small, domestic-only launch in Japan and due to its convoluted code, it became known as a game that was impossible to translate even by the most dedicated fan-translators/rom-hackers. Until just recently. We’ll get to all of this and more over the course of this video!
All of this made it a game that, among retro gaming enthusiasts, became more fabled and mist-shrouded than the real-world mountain which originated its title:

MONSTERS OF THE WEEK NOCTURNE (1999): RESURRECTING A FORGOTTEN SURVIVAL HORROR CLASSIC
#NocturneReview #SurvivalHorror
Nocturne is the epitome of a horror game that’s impossible to boil down into a 2-digit number intended to quantify how “objectively” good it is. Released in 1999 and developed by Terminal Reality, it was technically so impressive that barely any computer could run it remotely smoothly at the time. It’s an incredibly atmospheric horror gaming gem in the truest sense of the metaphor, highly overlooked, neglected and dropped from distribution into obscure abandonware state, that - no matter how you end up feeling about it - will leave an impression on you. And it’s one that I keep being bummed about that it never received a proper sequel.
I can also highly recommend @GrimBeard's video on Nocturne in case you want to hear more about it! youtube.com/watch?v=EIcFGF2w2dQ

I've gotten access to the game before launch and it had hooked me from the moment I played the demo a few months ago, and I couldn't stop playing until I got to the end of its 6-8 hourlong campaign set in the world of cabaret dancing in late 80s Paris.
Noteworthy to mention is that the maestro himself, Akira Yamaoka has contributed to the soundtrack with 10 highly atmospheric tracks to underscore to the surreal and haunting nightmare-dreamscapes protagonist Gloria visits during her Oddyssey into the depths of her psyche.

In this mini-series, Origins of Survival Horror, we’re going to explore the games that preceded Resident Evil (the game that coined the term), but that were already full-blown survival horror games through and through.
Today, we’re covering the trailblazing 1992 horror adventure Alone in the Dark, developed by Infogrames and directed by Frérérick Raynal. Alone in the Dark was both technically and game-design wise absolutely ahead of its time, pioneering the fixed-camera/pre-rendered background technique paired with pretty much all the signature elements that Resident Evil would later define as Survival Horror. Alone in the Dark would later be awarded the first-ever 3D Survival Horror game retroactively by the Guinnes Book of Records. Let’s talk about what makes this game such a fascinating milestone of video game history, and thennnn also explore the not-so-shiny legacy of the franchise down through the years - up until today.

It’s been 25 years! The original Baroque by Sting Entertainment came out in 1998 for the Sega Saturn and in 1999 for the PS1 It was an absolutely gorgeous, grotesque, surreal, brain-screwing horror action RPG that masterfully concocted Roguelike, dungeon crawler and survival horror elements into a sublime masterpiece that feels like a Shin Megami Tensei fever dream on acid. Sadly, it was never officially translated outside of Japan. (Only the 2008 remake for the Wii and PS2 got that honor) But, a few months ago, thanks to the valiant efforts of the ROM-hacking community, we’ve finally blessed with a masterful English fan-translation. So let’s celebrate the long-overdue Renaissance (pun intended) of a forgotten and neglected horror masterpiece!

Today, with this inaugural episode, we start our sojourn through the annals of Survival Horror history with the predecessor, the game that Resident Evil was originally intended to be a full-blown remake of: Sweet Home, the 1989 Japan-only Famicom Horror JRPG that was released alongside the Kiyoshi Kurosawa movie of the same name. This is a fascinating piece of video game history and still, to this day, a phenomenally good game on its own!

Capcom’s Haunting Ground is the spiritual successor to Clock Tower 3 and in many ways one of the most interesting survival horror titles ever made. Iterating on the pulse-pounding defenseless Stalker-Type-Horror genre, Haunting Ground goes places that even Silent Hill 3 only grazed in comparison. Today we talk about what makes this title one of the most fascinating and rich horror games ever created.
I’ve tried for years to find the right angle to cover this game - and to celebrate finally getting it over the finish line, I’m also going to unwrap my beloved factory-sealed PS2 copy of the game (which currently goes for ridiculous prices on the used-game-market thanks to the surge in scalper-scum activity in recent years)

When Survival Horror was on the rise after Resident Evil’s meteoric rise, a ton of (especially Japanese) game companies came up with their own take on the emerging horror sub-genre, with many trying to impart their own twist and flavor on the formula. Atlus (yes, the SMT/Persona guys) also tried their hand at it with the wonderfully experimental subterranean horror-adventure Hellnight (known as Dark Messiah in Japan). It came out in 1998 in Japan for the PS1 and was only released in a few European countries in a translated version in December 1999, with few copies and fewer game journalists grasping what this game attempted to do - resulting in abysmal review scores and Atlus ultimately dropping Survival Horror for good. Which is a damn shame, because Hellnight was highly inventive, pioneering many mechanics that have become tried and true staples in survival horror gaming. A prime example for a game that was far ahead of its time... or rather pearls before swine.

There’s probably not a single game on the N64 that received so much unrightful slander as Castlevania (1999). Coming out just under a year after the template-setting Symphony of the Night, the internet hivemind, greatly helped by Koji Igarashi himself, created the meme that Castlevania on the N64 sucks, is a bad game, and a bunch of diarrhea donkey farts by doo-doo-brained developers. Which is a load of crap, and it’s time we set the record straight.

Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong by French developer Big Bad Wolf came out today, on May 19th. It's a self-titled "narrative RPG" set in the World of Darkness that puts heavy emphasis on social combat -- dialogue confrontations over direct combat simulation. I've gotten access to a review code, played it 3 days straight and in this video I'll share with you my thoughts on it, what I like, what works, but also where its balancing-issues and identity crisis can lead to frustration.

NORCO is a beautiful, ephemeral and astonishingly well-written Sci-Fi Southern Gothic Detective Story set in the petrochemical swamplands of the real-world town of Norco, Louisiana, that touches on many of the most important struggles of our current generation. It’s been developed by Geography of Robots and published by RawFury and was released in April 2022, and it absolutely took me by storm. This video is a (largely spoiler-free) discussion of the impressions it made on me, themes and game design intricacies that deserve high praise.

PowerSlave was, in my humble opinion, one of the most overlooked, and super influential Boomer Classic Shooters of the Build-Engine era. The game was developed by Lobotomy Software and released in two completely different versions for PC and consoles (PlayStation and Sega Saturn). Where the PC version was your standard, run-off-the-mill "doom-clone" shooter, where you traversed linear levels with the odd door-key puzzle, the console versions offered fully polygonal 3D environments with open-ended Metroidvania-style traversal a good deal before Symphony of the Night came out.
With PowerSlave Exhumed, Nightdive has beautifully remastered this overlooked and underrated classic shooter gem with a skillful merging of the best-of-both-worlds of both console versions. It's a damn near perfect remaster and a great and rare example of how video game preservations should be done. This video... talks about why that's the case!

American McGee, after making his mark on legendary classics such as Doom and Quake, went solo and created one of the most original and forward-thinking adventure game of the turn of the Millennium: The dark and twisted adaptation of Lewis Carrol’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland with American McGee’s Alice. It’s a tale that even precedes psychological horror milestones like Silent Hill 2 with a treatment of mental health related topics with tact and taste, an impeccable emo-goth aesthetic and besides all that, incredibly engaging action adventure/shooter gameplay that still holds up to this day. It’s long overdue for me to sing its praises in Monsters of the Week.

Visceral Games’ video game adaptation of Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy Part 1: Dante’s Inferno has always been one of my guilty pleasure titles. The game was initially planned to be the first of 3 adaptations of the individual parts of the original poems, but it can be conjectured that it didn’t sell well enough to warrant the production of its sequels. Which is a shame. Today I’m going to talk about why this certainly imperfect, sometimes quite pubescently crass take on the Inferno is actually totally worth playing and ... critically over-analysing. Follow me on my Journey Through Dante’s Inferno and the Nine Circles of the Infernal Underworld!

For how obscure and forgotten it is, this is a surprisingly brilliant and brutally overlooked survival horror title. Co-directed by none other than Goichu Suda aka Suda 51, it’s a brilliantly crafted, soil-your-pants-scary, genuine Fatal Frame that brings a handful of new innovations to the formula, including claustrophobia-inducing over-the-shoulder camera and hauntinly immersive motion controls, and the fact that Nintendo lets it rot in their vaults is an *unpunished capital crime*.

Eternal Darkness is often named as one of the greatest survival horror games ever made. It was highly creative, technically impressive and a great example of both, great lovecraftian fiction in video games before it became ubiquitous in media, as well as how much a narrative-first approach in game design can benefit a good experience. It’s an amazing game that sadly almost nobody at the time bought and played.

MONSTERS OF THE WEEK: CLOCK TOWER 3
Clock Tower 3 is a game that is dear to my heart, heavily misunderstood and it's gotten far more flack than it deserves by the YouTube "shitting on games" cottage industry over the past decade. So it's due time to show just how great its wild readiness for experimentation and weirdness was, how well it incorporates tone to create a perfect playable slasher movie experience and just how much of a long-term impact its Stalker-Antagonist game design had on the modern wave of survival horror greats of recent years.

After playing through the 2-3 hour long demo 3 times I was eager to show you how much of a damn cool, absurd and hilarious post-apocalyptic action RPG dream come true this game is for me. I had a fantastic time.
This demo will be available June 16th through 22 as part of the Steam Next Fest event, Death Trash will hit early access in late summer 2021 with a several times larger playable area and is planned for final release in 2022 for PC, Xbox One, Series S and X, Nintendo Switch as well as PS4 and PS5. Since this is an early version, bugs and glitches are to be expected.

MONSTERS OF THE WEEK: A LOVE LETTER TO VAMPIRE: THE MASQUERADE - REDEMPTION
Christof Romuald’s dark and poignant journey through the ages was the first ever World of Darkness video game adaptation and it’s been a favorite of mine since the day it released. It’s in many ways a poorly balanced, janky and overambitious mess of an Action-RPG, but once you bring it to heel it becomes one of the most lovable, enthralling, fund and enjoyable Vampire games to date that I just had to dedicate a love letter to; I could only let Bloodlines be alone there for so long.

In 1999, the small developer studio Sacnoth, founded by former Squaresoft composer Hiroki Kikuta released Koudelka for the Sony PlayStation, a strange and unexpected hybrid of Survival Horror, Immersive Sim and classic JRPG gameplay. It was a title whose development cycle saw a lot of turbulence and its unconventional genre-blend was not well received by the gaming press at the time. But Koudelka is a forgotten gem that has so much more to offer than it seems at first glance. A refreshingly small and personal story for a JRPG in an unspent setting in early 20th century rural Wales realized with surprisingly good character, motion and voice acting for its time that’s still engaging to play – and ultimately ignited one of the most beloved series in JRPG history: Shadow Hearts.

MONSTERS OF THE WEEK: CRYOSTASIS - SLEEP OF REASON
The Ukrainian Psychological Horror First Person Shooter Cryostasis is an overlooked gem of mid-2000s shooter design, with still-up-to-this-day technically impressive visual and technical design and a setting unlike any other in an action-heavy narrative game. The game takes place on an icebound ARKTIKA class nuclear icebreaker, stuck in the north pole and it is your role to piece together the story of what went down on the unlucky ship by traveling into the deceased crew members’ memories and witnessing the events unfold from their eyes. It’s a game that deserves to be preserved, which is hard these days due to its technical limitations and difficult availability due to non-arbitrable legal differences between the developer Action Forms and their publisher 1C Company.
ADDENDUM - IF YOU WANT TO GET CRYOSTASIS In the video, I say that the easiest way to get access to Cryostasis on Steam is Key Resellers, and that is true, however, please note that the game is also considered Abandonware and is available on Abandonware sites for download. Which is legally grey, so proceed at your own risk.

Fatal Frame III: The Tormented is a highly overlooked gem and my personal favorite entry in the entire series. In this video I’m going to try to pin down why I believe this one is the secretly genius masterstroke of the PS2-era trilogy and how it manages to lift its predecessors even higher and combine them to an inseparable unity of survival horror games.

When Majora's Mask was released for the N64 in 2000, it wasn't critically as highly regarded as its predecessor Ocarina of Time by the press, but over time the game's gentle humanistic message, anchored in brilliant time-looping gameplay, turned into a timeless cult-classic, because it embraced things off the beaten Zelda path and delivered a truly heartwarming message.
In this last, special episode of Monsters of the Week for the year, we'll end the year 2020 for this channel on a kind note with The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask

Kain is one of the earliest and most prolific morally dark-grey anti-hero protagonists in video game history. And what a legacy he left: One of the most iconic and epic series in video game history, including Soul Reaver and Defience that Blood Omen layed the fundamental groundwork for. The title of this video is a folie-a-deux, because Kain's Origin story is both, a gothic horror tragedy worthy of Homer (The ancient Greek one), as well as plagued by a troublesome and tragic development history. Let's take a nostalgia trip to where it all began: At the good old Pillars of Nosgoth!

The first Fatal Frame was already a phenomenal survival horror game, but its sequel Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly is one of those examples where the successor surpasses the original in pretty much every regard. This video explores why Makoto Shibata's second foray into Yokai-haunted rural Japan is easily one of the best horror games ever made.

From Software entered its golden age with Dark Souls, or some even say with Demon's Souls before that, but many years before that, they released a true classic survival horror gem that has been strongly overshadowed by Shinji Mikami's game changer Resident Evil 4 at the time: Kuon. This game is in many ways the epitome of old-school survival horror design and gets often overlooked -- which is why we're going to unearth this wonderful PS2 classic set in Edo Japan.

The 2020 remake of Resident Evil 3 is an excellent game that I highly enjoyed, start to finish, and without cutting into this great experience, feel weirdly let down by at the same time. This video is an exploration why those two contradictory feelings can peacefully coexist inside you with this game. Because it was always meant to stand between multiple chairs at once.

Before FromSoftware entered their golden Age with their highly influential lineup of Action RPGs Demon’s Souls, Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, they’ve been around for a while. In this video, we’re going to dig up a genuine black sheep of their early PS1 days, an experimental aberration of their otherwise more action-oriented lineup, Echo Night is an unabashedly Japanese take on the western adventure game. A chilling mystery/horror puzzler that displays many of the hallmarks that FromSoftware’s famously cryptic, asymmetric and shrouded-in-mystery type of storytelling, raw and uncut.
