Before anyone asks why I'm covering these songs so quickly, or in a manner so similar to fellow musician FamilyJules, this is part of a little challenge! GameGrooves ( game-grooves.com/blog/august-2020-qfcc
) hosted Jules' challenge to the community to cover these famous six tracks from my favorite Zelda title as a means to motivate us to think differently, work smarter if not faster, and try to compile our ideas into one medley. While I'm still juggling a huge album and plenty of other fun things, going back to my favorite game gives me a lot more creativity and relaxation believe it or not! Given the game and how influential he's been to my own channel, I had to give it a shot! Remember, this was only done in about 1 week - so quality is definitely compromised a little bit!
Musically I've dabbled with the warp songs, little melodies used to teleport Link from place to place, and while I felt they have remarkable tunes on their own.. we had to do something more and something more "me". I combined elements of each Warp Song's corresponding temple (Forest, Fire, etc) to give them more introduction and context. I tried hard-hits on Minuet with the 8 string, imbuing some Indian instruments into Bolero briefly, more acoustic ballad in Serenade, thrash/groove metal into Nocturne, that sliding/whammy sound in Requiem, and finished Prelude with more fun and modern "slap" tone.
The best part of this challenge, besides reflecting on songs from my favorite game, is being able to reflect on the last 10+ years of cover-music and arranging VGM. I know 2010 Ro would've rushed through this challenge going as generically as possible, and it gives me a bit of pride and excitement to see how I approach these projects now. I've gained a lot more confidence in my own arranging voice, videography style, and in general just having fun with this kind of project - I hope you all enjoy my take on Ocarina of Time's six warp songs, and consider how each little part of your workflow, writing, recording, could be tinkered with to be more fun, interesting, creative, or even done quicker.
