I enjoy practicing fire techniques as a hobby. I’ve mentioned this many times down through the years, but it still doesn’t seem register.
Many close minded survivalists will tell you, that you can’t learn real fire making from someone in their backyard. They assume that all my materials are predried and ideal in every way and not like what you’d find off the landscape.
I agree, many of these techniques are much harder to near impossible in the woods. But, many more could be easily adapted to/for survival fire making.
Let’s use my never miss Yucca spindle on a piece of 1/4 round molding that I found in the garage. What could you possibly learn from this frivolous demonstration of hand drill?:
1) How to pick soft enough wood for the fire board.
2) How the fire board doesn’t have to held when there’s lots of surface area contact.
3) How long a tiny ember will last and still be viable.
4) How well Pine Needles maintain an ember.
5) How narrow a fire board can be compared to the spindle’s diameter.
6) When heat sinking is and is not a problem.
7) Impromptu log cabin build (BUUUTTT! Always have your tinder bundles and fire lays made before going for an ember).
8) Practice fire techniques for enjoyment and the strengthening of your skills.
