Rikki Poynter | You Won't Believe the Struggle of Lip Reading for Deaf People! @rikkipoynter | Uploaded September 2024 | Updated October 2024, 11 hours ago.
Deaf people will ask hearing people to meet halfway by typing on the phone, or writing on a piece of paper. Hearing people will keep on talking despite the requests of deaf people and then get mad when we don’t understand them and then the interaction takes two times as long as it could've been, and more frustrating. Lip reading is not a guarantee, and takes much more energy than a hearing person having a conversation with their peers. It takes more effort than learning sign language.

(Obviously, there are hearing people that are respectful and do meet us halfway with communication, but more often than not…)

Video Description:
Rikki with no makeup on, hair down. She is signing and speaking at the same time.

Text in white font on red background: “You need to learn about lip reading.”

Screenshot of comment says, “Why do you expect people to put effort into communicating with you when you refuse to put in the effort to communicate with them??? Just use your resources like the Internet to LEARN to lip read. People aren’t just born with that skill, everyone else had to learn how so why do you think you’re the exception?? Use the Internet. You’re already here. Put your effort into learning to read lips instead of complaining about it and wallowing in self pity. I know this is harsh, but it’s something you’re going to have to accept and hopefully apply to your life. I don’t want to hear your excuses, so don’t bother replying.”

Transcript:
So this is the part where I would say that you need to take your own advice and, you know, look on the Internet. Because then you would know that lip reading… it’s not the way you think that it is, right? 30-40% of the English language can maybe be read on the lips, right? So if you went and looked and read on the Internet, you would see that. You would know that, also, deaf people have always put in more effort into making communication halfway, equal. More than hearing people. Always. So…
