You sleep I drive. Buckle up, It's a long overnight road trip. I'll take the wheel and you can sleep all the way, or watch the scenery from dusk, overnight into dawn as we travel from NorCal to SoCal. non-stop on I-5.
Interstate 5, aka TheI-5 in California is the notoriously long conduit between Northern and Southern California.
Many have driven this stretch a few times.
A few, mostly truckers, have driven it countless times.
Drive it once and you will never forget it.
Not because of the valley farms or the distant mountains to the east and west, but simply because it is relentlessly long to get to the wonderful destinations waiting at either end.
This recording covers 530 miles (853 km) Redding to L.A. of the full Oregon to Mexico corridor...796 miles (1,281 km) in total. Two thirds of the entire California I-5 in a single unedited drive.
To put that in perspective, this is the equivalent of driving from New York City to North Carolina, or Paris to Barcelona. However this is one highway in one state.
The drive begins at dusk in Redding and goes to night through the Central Valley. Sunrise arrives near Bakersfield at 6:50. Recorded in an electric vehicle — so what you hear is pure road ambience. Wind, tires, pavement and passing traffic. No engine. No edits. No cuts.
This is I-5 as it actually sounds from behind the wheel at night, the long flat Central Valley stretch, the hum of the road, the occasional pass of a truck in the dark. A sound that millions of Californians know by heart.
Tire, wind and road noise only...no engine.
