Recently request came in to make an alternate variation of the Tinnitus Scrubber that might help the listener with misophonia, a sound perception condition where certain sounds can cause emotional stress or more. There are comments about listeners using sounds on the channel to mask the sound of others chewing, breathing, typing keyboards and on and on. In some cases these relatively benign type of sounds can be triggering far beyond the traditional experience of hearing such sounds that our minds usually ignore.
Originally known as Selective Sound Sensitivity Syndrome or 4S, misophonia was first coined in 2001 by Pawel Jastreboff, Ph.D., and Margaret M. Jastreboff, Ph.D. I reckon it has been around much longer as people have used noise, sound machines and fans, or been lulled by waves, waterfalls, or even airplanes and automobiles for a long time.
The Scrubber V5 uses he originally sounds, however, eliminating the sweeping high frequency noise in favor of a steady White and Blue Noise. The rhythmic sound (sort of like helicopter blades) also originally had a frequency shift from 4 kHz to 20 kHz which now peaks closer to 10 kHz.
It is rewarding to make these sounds, particularly upon request. If one person craves a type of noise, there are certainly other listeners who will find relief or benefit from the sound as well.
