I love what I do because I have the opportunity to work with the people: my patients, their families, and the members of their community. Together, they educate, challenge, and humble me and my research team constantly by their needs, yet also provide such gratitude, even when we cannot deliver all they would like to.
My name is Xuemei Huang, the chair of the department of neurology at the University of Virginia. My own research is to improve the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases, such as Parkinson's disease and related conditions, as well as to understand the causes of these disorders.
The impact of the new Manning Institute for Biotechnology was a huge factor in pursuing me to come to UVA. The Manning Institute will bring researchers together to provide the right environment for them to talk and exchange ideas easily. This will keep UVA at the forefront of answering human-related health questions. For me personally, there is a growing burden of neurologic disorders that may be outpacing all the diseases as our population ages. I cannot imagine a better place to start the next chapter of my career to embrace these challenges here, right in the UVA grounds.
