In my lab, we're discovering the biochemical communication networks that control how cells behave. What I really love about this challenge is that cells are way more complicated than an aircraft carrier or an airplane. And so we need to be combining not just biology, but also engineering and AI to map all the things that are going on inside cells, and then use these maps to discover new drugs for disease.

My name is Jeff Saucerman. I'm a professor of biomedical engineering and cardiovascular medicine here at UVA. And my research group combines computational and experimental methods to discover new drugs for heart disease.

Our team has already identified a number of new compounds that, while still at early stages, have the potential to be translated to affect human health down the road. In addition, we’ve identified a number of drugs that have been already approved for other diseases, but we're finding new uses for them in heart disease. And this type of research is really translational, so we can only do this in collaboration with wonderful scientists in the Cardiovascular Research Center, as well as physicians in cardiovascular medicine.
