Playthrough with Akuma, my favorite X-Men character. This version of the game is included on Marvel Vs. Capcom Fighting Collection Arcade Classics.
ZZZZ. That’s what this playthrough is, sleep inducing. If you pick Akuma you may be thinking dur hur easy win but it’s anything but. This game was originally released in 1994, which was the year of fighting games with atrocious AI. Super Turbo, Samurai Shodown II, Virtua Fighter 2 etc. It’s crazy to me Capcom released this game with the CPU being so brutally difficult -you’d think they’d want to attract more people to play, eg fans of the X-Men cartoon series. I just have this vision of an X-Men fan trying this game out, getting their ass smashed by the CPU on the first fight, then never touching the game again.
The CPU has the usual input reading and damage boosts of the era, but one of my main complaints is that it just blocks way too much. All the CPU opponents are also really fast and will counter everything you do constantly. But Akuma has a secret weapon: his air fireball. This is the move that made him a broken character in Super Turbo, and it’s even more potent in this game (at least against the CPU) as he throws out two of them. The reason it’s so good is because how much super combo gauge you can get by using it -you’ll get a bit just by doing the move, but then get more if the fireballs hit the opponent, regardless whether the opponent blocks them or not.
So the game plan with Akuma is to spam his air fireballs constantly and then when the super gauge is full, do his fireball super. The CPU is going to block everything 90% of the time, but his super fireball still does decent chip damage. It’s a boring way of playing the game, but then the game doesn’t give you much choice due to the CPU’s aggressiveness. You really don’t want to try fighting toe to toe with the likes of Sentinel or Juggernaut anyway.
