Playthrough with the Benimaru team. KoF 2000 keeps things similar to the previous one, with strikers making their return. But the main difference this time is that every character has an alternate striker you can pick. Some are KoF characters like Daimon, some are obscure characters like Eiji, others are completely new like Kyoko. There's quite a lot of references to other SNK games with the alternate strikers.
This was SNK's final game before they went bankrupt. The series would continue of course, but some fans think there is a clear divide between the games the original SNK developed and everything that came after. Perhaps the devs knew this was going to be the end when they were making this, hence the message in the credits at the very end -SNK loves us. The entire tournament takes place in South Town, the place where SNK's first Neo Geo fighting game was set. The fact that South Town gets obliterated in the ending for each team marks the end of an era.
The battle points from the previous game are also present in this one. By getting a certain amount, you can fight Kula in a bonus fight. When you fight Kula the background you fight on will be altered to look frozen. If you defeat her, it'll add an extra scene to the ending sequence.
This game only has one boss, called Zero. He's not actually too bad for an SNK boss, although he does tend to block a lot. He's based on Han from Fist of the North Star 2, although I imagine most non-Japanese players wouldn't realize this. One of Zero's super moves, the crimson scrape dance, is a near copy of one of Han's techniques.
One other thing about this game: it introduces Ron. He's this mysterious guy who is skilled in riding a bike (I am not making this up) and seems to be an important character in the KoF story... but he never actually gets to do much. He appears in the next game but isn't playable, and then after that he only makes cameo appearances in the endings for certain teams. You'd think SNK intended to do something with this character, but as of 2025 this hasn't happened...
