Playthrough of the Extreme Battle mode with Chris Redfield. Extreme Battle was first seen in the PS1 Dualshock version of Resident Evil 2. This mode has you picking one of four characters (two of which have to be unlocked) and then having to get from the Umbrella underground lab to the police station to locate four bombs.
Extreme Battle has three difficulty levels. Level 1 is the only one available at the start, beating that unlocks level 2, and beating that unlocks level 3. I’m playing on level 3, the hardest difficulty. On level 3, there’s less ammo, more powerful enemies, and you take a lot more damage than usual. If you’re on yellow caution status, a single swipe from a Licker can kill you. The difficulty spike between levels 2 and 3 can’t be understated, this is one of the hardest RE campaigns you can play.
Enemies and ammo are randomized in certain rooms. For example, sometimes in the room at 2:36 you may get zombies, or you may get dogs. 21:19 is an example with the ammo -I got lucky here as this room had two shotgun ammos in it and a handgun ammo. Sometimes I've been in this room and there was only the handgun ammo. But the biggest difference with level 3 is that you’ll have to face G4 Birkin multiple times in the RPD.
Chris is a good character because he starts out with a rocket launcher. You’ll still want to go out of you way to collect the other rocket launcher seen at 9:52 though. The handgun Chris uses is also good, as it has a chance at blowing apart a zombie’s head when shot. You’ll see this happen a few times throughout this playthrough.
Extreme Battle consists of three stages. The first stage you have a decent chance at completing without the need to pick up any extra ammo. Stage two isn’t that hard either. But stage 3 is where things get really difficult. In stage 3, you’re required to locate and collect four bombs. These bombs are randomly placed throughout the RPD. I got really, really bad RNG here as I ended up checking every possible location, and not finding the final bomb until the very end. “It’s always in the last place you look” indeed.
Ideally you’ll find your first bomb in the jail cell at 19:19, but for me it wasn’t there. The next possible location is at 23:49… and no bomb. I finally found my first bomb at 29:40, then it didn’t take me too long to get the second at 32:40. Things were looking good when I found my third bomb in the STARS office at 33:39. Then everything went wrong.
36:27 -In an ideal world, this is where the fourth bomb would have been, above the fireplace. But of course, it wasn't. This led be to taking the unwise decision of taking the route which involves getting past G4 Birkin at 37:03. I'd considered going back all the way past the STARS office but somehow manged to pull it off without taking too much damage.
The next place to go to involves having to get past G4 Birkin again, the corridor at 38:43 was one I dreaded going down. Get past there and usually the next room only has zombies in it. The room at 39:46 can have a bomb in it on the table... but of course, it didn't here, instead I got poisoned by one of the plant monsters for my troubles. I then had to go all the way back and get past Birkin again and make my way back up to where the crashed helicopter is. The last bomb location is at the police parking lot, and to get to it involves another chance encounter with G4 Birkin... which of course, I got. Sometimes you only have to deal with crows here!
The only ending difference with level 3 happens at 46:40 -on the other levels, the text is on a black background here, but on level 3, there’s a picture of what’s presumably Raccoon City instead.
