The Allied offensive in North Africa during World War II represents one of the most complex joint campaigns in military history. This documentary utilizes upscaled and fully colorized vintage archival footage to present the complete strategic and tactical timeline of Operation Torch and the subsequent battle for Tunisia. From high-level diplomatic conferences in London and Washington to direct tactical air interdiction over rugged mountain passes, this historical visual record chronicles the operational coordination required to liberate the Mediterranean.
The initial landings on November 8, 1942, established three primary beachheads at Casablanca, Oran, and Algiers. Naval gunfire support silenced heavy coastal defense guns, while carrier-based aircraft established localized air control. Following the cessation of hostilities with French territorial forces, Allied command organized a rapid eastward drive toward the strategic ports of Tunis and Bizerte. Paratroop units dropped deep behind enemy lines to capture key rail hubs and forward landing strips, while naval commandos secured coastal positions at Bône and Bougie.
Logistical challenges defined the early months of the campaign. While Axis forces enjoyed short supply routes across the Mediterranean from Sicily, Allied supplies had to travel thousands of miles by sea and hundreds of miles over primitive African roads. When heavy winter rains arrived in December 1942, unpaved airfields became unusable, severely limiting tactical air support. Despite these conditions, Allied fighter pilots continuously engaged the Luftwaffe, inflicting heavy losses while defending mountain supply corridors along the Great Dorsal ridge.
A vital turning point in air-ground doctrine occurred during this campaign. All American and British fighter and attack bomber units were integrated into a unified Tactical Air Force. Working side-by-side with ground commanders, tactical air controllers directed flying artillery against enemy armor, troop concentrations, and supply lines. Strategic bombing campaigns targeted enemy ports in southern Europe, cutting off critical fuel and ammunition shipments across the sea valve.
By March 1943, the combined pressure of General Montgomery's Eighth Army advancing from the south and General Anderson's First Army pressing from the west compressed Axis forces into a shrinking northern pocket. Battles for dominant terrain features, including Longstop Hill, Takrouna, and Hill 609, broke the backbone of enemy resistance. On May 7, 1943, armored columns swept into Tunis and Bizerte, cutting off remaining escape routes at Cape Bon and securing the total surrender of enemy forces in North Africa.
