The history of rotary-winged aircraft saw dramatic innovations, beginning with early autogiros designed by Juan de la Cierva to prevent fatal stalls. By the late 1950s, Fairey Aviation sought to conquer the civil transport market by introducing the Rotodyne, a monumental 40-seat compound helicopter aiming to provide direct city-center to city-center travel. The Rotodyne utilized a massive 90-foot rotor powered entirely by tip jets, completely eliminating the need for heavy, complex mechanical gearing. During vertical ascent, compressed air mixed with aviation fuel burned fiercely at the rotor tips. In forward flight, twin Napier Eland turboprops took over propulsion, allowing the massive rotor to autorotate as the aircraft achieved speeds exceeding 190 miles per hour.
Simultaneously, fixed-wing engineers across the globe experimented with radical Canard configurations, placing the tail surface at the nose to eliminate standard stall characteristics. Heinrich Focke's early F-19 Ente inspired Kurt Tank's secret Model 42 bomber project in Germany. In Britain, Miles Aircraft developed the Libellula, a highly unusual tandem-wing design aimed at drastically improving forward visibility for dangerous carrier landings. The United States Army Air Forces briefly tested the Curtiss XP-55 Ascender, a pusher-propeller fighter featuring elevators in the nose, though deadly stalling issues eventually doomed the experimental project. In the Pacific, the Japanese military desperately constructed the Kyushu Shinden, a highly maneuverable canard interceptor designed specifically to dismantle American B-29 formations, but the conflict ended before it could be deployed.
As the Cold War escalated, the strategic vulnerability of traditional runways pushed aircraft designers toward Vertical Takeoff and Landing (VTOL) capabilities. The Ryan Aeronautical Company developed the extraordinary X-13 VertiJet, a revolutionary tail-sitter. Suspended by a simple nose hook on a vertically tilting trailer, the X-13 relied on advanced thrust vectoring to launch directly into the sky. Test pilot Pete Girard successfully transitioned from a vertical hover to conventional flight and back, though the blind vertical landing procedure proved operationally impractical for combat pilots. Following the VertiJet, Ryan introduced the VZ-3 Vertiplane to study Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) physics. By utilizing massive flaps to deflect the propeller slipstream downward, the aircraft demonstrated extreme slow-flight capabilities, eventually transitioning to NASA for extended aerodynamic research.
