To shield four-engine heavy bombers—affectionately referred to as the "Big Friends"—against determined Luftwaffe interceptors like the Focke-Wulf FW-190, Messerschmitt Bf 109, and twin-engine Junkers Ju 88, American commanders developed a sophisticated tactical relay system. P-47 Thunderbolts pushed the bombers across the English Channel, P-38 Lightnings maintained coverage deeper into the continent, and long-range P-51 Mustangs escorted the strike forces all the way to target objectives deep within Germany and back.
