Conducted by an experienced flight crew consisting of pilot B.A. Erickson, flight observer J.D. McEachern, and observer C.L. Following comprehensive ground vibration checks and engine runs to full military power, the aircraft underwent sequential low-speed and high-speed taxi runs. On November 11, 1956, amidst clear skies and favorable weather, the B-58 taxied to the active runway for its historic first flight, escorted by a Convair YF-102 observation aircraft and an F-94 camera plane. Lifting off smoothly after a 3,300-foot ground roll at 160 knots, the aircraft initiated a steady climb. Telemetry systems beamed flight data back to ground recording stations while the crew explored flight characteristics at 10,000 feet, successfully retracting the long landing gear required to achieve proper ground takeoff angles. After testing stability at 20,000 feet and 0.7 Mach, the bomber settled onto the runway 38 minutes after departure, deploying its drag chute to achieve a routine stop. On September 18, 1959, a Hustler executed a low-level assault flight across four states from Texas to California, maintaining speeds near the speed of sound while flying no higher than 500 feet above the terrain. This achievement verified that high-speed, low-level penetration was entirely feasible, allowing the bomber to hug valleys, skirt mountaintops, and evade enemy radar installations and missile sites. Supplemented by high-altitude capabilities and precision weapon delivery tests at the Holloman Test Range, the B-58 established a commanding presence within the Strategic Air Command inventory, culminating in dominant performances at annual combat competitions and setting multiple international speed records.
