In late October 1956, the Strategic Air Command entered the supersonic age with the emergence of the Convair B-58 Hustler. Developed at Convair’s Fort Worth division, this revolutionary aircraft combined a sharply swept delta wing, an area-ruled fuselage, and four General Electric J79 turbojets to achieve sustained speeds of Mach 2 at altitudes exceeding 50,000 feet. This comprehensive documentary chronicles the developmental milestones, testing trials, and operational capabilities of the free world’s first operational supersonic bomber.
The flight testing program began on October 29, 1956, with preliminary ground taxi maneuvers at Fort Worth, Texas. Under the command of chief test pilot B.A. Erickson, flight observer J.D. McEachern, and observer C.L. Harrison, the crew conducted low-speed and high-speed taxi runs to evaluate ground handling, turning radius, and braking performance. Following modifications to the brake assembly and high-speed trials reaching 138 knots, the Hustler completed its maiden flight on Veterans Day, November 11, 1956. Accompanied by Convair YF-102A and Northrop F-94C chase planes, the aircraft reached 20,000 feet and Mach 0.7 before landing with a deployed deceleration chute after thirty-eight minutes aloft.
By September 1959, operational trials demonstrated the bomber's remarkable low-level penetration capabilities. Racing across four states from Texas to California, the Hustler flew at near-sonic speeds while maintaining an altitude of less than 500 feet above the terrain to evade hostile early-warning radar networks. High-altitude capabilities were underscored on November 22, 1960, with a successful automated nuclear weapon pod release at Mach 2 from 50,000 feet over the Holloman Test Range. At the 1960 SAC Combat Competition at Bergstrom Air Force Base, the 43rd Bomb Wing crew secured the High and Low-Level Bombing Award, executing a scramble start and taxi in two minutes and ten seconds.
