James Butler Sucker Punch On Richard Grant
On November 23, 2001, American super middleweight boxer James Butler delivered one of the most infamous sucker punches in sports history to his opponent, Richard Grant. The incident occurred at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City during a Friday Night Fights event meant to raise money for the Twin Towers Fund following the 9/11 attacks.
After 10 rounds, Richard Grant was declared the winner by unanimous decision. Following the announcement, Grant walked over to Butler's corner to embrace him in a customary post-fight show of sportsmanship. Butler, who had already taken his gloves off, feigned cooperation but instead unleashed a bare-fisted right hook directly into Grant's face. The unexpected blow knocked Grant instantly to the canvas.
Grant suffered a dislocated jaw and a severe laceration to his tongue that required 26 stitches. Butler was arrested in the ring, charged with second-degree assault, and subsequently served four months in Rikers Island jail. Butler was indefinitely suspended by the New York State Athletic Commission. Though he was later briefly reinstated in 2003 after expressing remorse, his career was permanently derailed.
The sucker punch is often remembered as a dark prelude to Butler's later actions. In October 2004, Butler murdered his friend, sportswriter Sam Kellerman (the brother of prominent sports analyst Max Kellerman), by striking him with a hammer and setting fire to his apartment. In 2006, Butler pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and arson and was sentenced to 29 years and 4 months in prison.
