THE REFS MESSED UP SO BAD IT CAUSED A RIOT 🤯

BROWNS BOTTLEGATE GAME

"Bottlegate" (also known as the Beer Bottle Game) refers to one of the most infamous officiating controversies and fan riots in NFL history. The incident took place on December 16, 2001, at Cleveland Browns Stadium during a Week 14 matchup between the Cleveland Browns and the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Browns sat at a 6–6 record and desperately needed a victory to keep their playoff aspirations alive. The Jaguars were 4–8 and mostly out of contention. Trailing 15–10 with 1:08 left in the fourth quarter, the Browns were driving down the field. They faced a crucial 4th-and-2 at the Jaguars' 12-yard line.

Browns quarterback Tim Couch passed to wide receiver Quincy Morgan for a 3-yard gain. Morgan bobbled the ball, but officials on the field ruled it a complete pass and a first down. To prevent the replay booth from reviewing the catch, Couch rushed the offense to the line and spiked the ball to stop the clock with 48 seconds remaining. Under NFL rules, once a subsequent play is legally snapped and run, a previous play is no longer reviewable. Despite the spike, referee Terry McAulay announced that the replay booth was going back to review the 4th-down catch. The officials claimed they had buzzed down before the spike, but a communication system malfunction prevented the field crew from hearing it in time. Following the review, the catch was overturned and ruled incomplete. Possession was awarded to the Jaguars, effectively sealing the game. Browns head coach Butch Davis argued furiously, but the decision stood.

Enraged by the fact that the refs broke fundamental replay logic to strip them of a potential game-winning drive, the Cleveland crowd erupted. Thousands of fans began pelting the field with plastic beer bottles, soda cups, trash cans, and other debris. The barrage was so intense that players and coaches from both teams, along with the officiating crew, had to dodge flying objects and flee to the stadium tunnels for safety. Seeing the unsafe conditions, referee Terry McAulay unilaterally declared the game over with 48 seconds left on the clock.
