BARRY SANDERS HAD THE COWBOYS TACKLING AIR 💀
Barry Sanders' legendary playoff run against the Dallas Cowboys occurred on January 5, 1992 during the 1991 NFC Divisional Round. Late in the fourth quarter, the Detroit Lions held a commanding lead when Sanders took a handoff near midfield, sliced through a wall of Cowboys defenders, and broke free for an iconic 47-yard touchdown run to seal a 38–6 victory. Up until that explosive play, the Cowboys' defense had managed to bottleneck him to just 22 rushing yards.
Sanders took the handoff and ran directly into what looked like a crowded pile of blockers and defenders. Instead of going down, he kept his legs churning, squeezed through the traffic, and emerged completely untouched on the other side. Once he hit the second level, his signature jukes and rapid cuts completely threw off the pursuit. Most notably, Cowboys defensive tackle Tony Casillas (#75) caught up to the play but assumed Sanders was wrapped up in the initial pile. By the time Casillas realized Sanders had escaped, he was caught standing straight up and completely turned backwards as Sanders sped past him.
Cowboys linebacker Darrick Brownlow (#51) attempted to dive for a desperation ankle-tackle near the sideline, but Sanders easily stepped out of the wrap-up, causing the defender to spin completely out of his shoes. This game marked the only postseason victory of Barry Sanders' Hall of Fame career, and it stood as the Detroit Lions' only playoff win in the Super Bowl era until their postseason run in January 2024.
