The Ryan Clark hit on Wes Welker occurred on November 30, 2008, during a game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium.
During the late third quarter, Patriots quarterback Matt Cassel threw a short pass over the middle intended for Welker. The football was deflected into the air. NFL Director of Officiating Mike Pereira confirmed that Clark legally led with his shoulder. Because the contact was deemed clean under the rules of that era, the NFL decided not to fine Clark for the hit.
Welker was shaken up on the play and did not return to the game. However, Welker later noted that since Clark struck him below the helmet, he managed to avoid a concussion from the impact.
