The San Jacinto Battleground State Historic Site in La Porte, Texas was where the Republic of Texas was born on April 21, 1836. General Sam Houston led a surprise attack against the Mexican army under General Santa Anna. In a stunning battle that lasted just 18 minutes, the outnumbered Texan forces secured a decisive victory, shouting the famous cries "Remember the Alamo!" and "Remember Goliad!" Today, the site is dominated by the massive San Jacinto Monument, which stands at 567 feet—making it the tallest masonry column in the world and deliberately designed to be 12 feet taller than the Washington Monument in D.C. At its base lies the San Jacinto Museum of History, home to incredible artifacts like Sam Houston’s personal ring inscribed with the word "Honor" and a glove belonging to Santa Anna. As you explore the 1,200-acre battlefield and look out from the monument's observation deck, you are standing on the very soil where the course of North American history was forever changed.
