No, Highway Hawthorne is not a species, it is merely an indication of where I got this piece of wood from. Sometimes I take the dogs for a longer walk and of course I try to find a quiet and safe spot where they can run freely.
That's how I landed on a service road that runs parallel to the motorway but separated from it by a ditch and a stretch of trees/bushes. It consists mainly of Willow, Poplar and of course Hawthorne.
I picked this piece up since it had the ideal size to make something on the lathe. It was also fairly dry, at least on the outside.
I really took my time to turn this. After turning the outside I waited several days to see if it would start cracking. It did crack a bit but not terribly. So then another session to do the hollowing and finally another day later the finishing; in all it took a full week to get from blank to bowl.
But it was worth every minute, this bowl turned out gorgeous.
