When Rav set the challenge for August, the first thing that came to my mind was a game called 'Tower of Hanoi', also known as the Tower of Brahma or Lucas' Tower. Not a particularly difficult project but one with a lot of measuring and repetitive work. Good practice! To increase the amount of turning involved, I also used the lathe to make the rods on which the discs go. I have been considering to apply colors to the discs but in the end I only painted the base. Six discs is really enough to make you think at least once.
Interested in some dimensions? Here you go:
- The discs (six in total) are all 20mm thick and the width goes from 40 to 90mm in increments of 10mm. Hole size is 14mm.
- The rods are about 12mm in diameter and 150mm long; 15mm of that length goes into the 10mm holes which were drilled in the base.
- The base is 92 by 310 by 20mm and the holes are drilled on the centerline at 55, 155 and 255 mm, measured from one of the sides.
Wood species used: Walnut for the discs, Rowan for the rods and a scrap piece of Oak for the base.
