In this video, I take a log of spalted beech and turn it into a beautiful vase, adding a subtle touch of blue to really highlight the natural spalting and grain. The contrast between the organic lines in the wood and that pop of colour made this one such a fun and satisfying project.
As always, I turned this vase on my Record Power Coronet Herald wood lathe and shaped it using my Easy Wood Tools carbide turning tools for clean, controlled cuts.
To bring out the depth and character of the spalted beech, I finished it with Yorkshire Grit abrasive paste, followed by Hampshire Sheen Microcrystalline Wax for a smooth, natural sheen that really makes the grain — and that hint of blue — stand out.
This was a really enjoyable woodturning from start to finish.
