My first ever hollow form, made from a pretty punky crotchpiece of Birch, with really fantastic spalting. To stabilize the wood, I used Polycryl Wood Fortifier. That worked quite well as far as strengthening the wood is concerned but if there is one thing I learned from this project, it is that you should apply the Polycryl only after doing all the sanding & finishing.
