My last big Ashtray has been well received; so well actually that I got a request to make another one from a relative of the recipients. He provided a big chunk of Pine to make it from, the diameter of this one is about 30cm / 12inches. Actually I wasn't planning on filming this but then changed my mind upon special request from Huw (woodenitbenice).
Pine is a course-grained wood and therefore very prone to tearout; you can clearly see that in the center section. The bark on the other hand looks very nice with a coat of transparent laquer. I had to put it on fairly thick because the bark is very flaky and there are still a few white spots where the laquer formed tiny pools; these will disappear when the laquer has fully cured.
Like the other one, the Ashtray was fitted with an inlay and I carefully measured out the slots to be 120 deg. apart. Meanwhile it has been delivered to the customer and he was very happy with it.
