A piece of Yew laying in a sheep paddock caught my attention and I thought that it should make something cool! When I started cutting it on the bandsaw to begin with ... I thought that I must have knocked over a bottle of turpentine or something... the smell was really strong. Turned out it was coming from the wood.
I also did my usual thing of microwaving the glue block and found that where anything else I had tried took about 30 seconds... this was in for 90 before I could get it loose at all! And at that point the resin in the wood is coming to the surface and I also found that the wood stayed hot for at least 15 minutes!
If I did a second one I think that I would probably go for the glue block sooner and I would angle it properly so that the bowl faced the right direction in the first place!
I should also mention here that what I did for the unturned parts of this... was I soaked it all in Mineral sprits and then ran it through a wire wheel on my drill press. Then I waxed it. All in all I like the way it looks!
