This release shouldn't be a surprise for those of you whom follow the originals channel. As for everyone else, I am very proud to present VOLUME 1 of my first ever MIDI Soundtrack! Specifically an (mostly) original soundtrack for a large total conversion mod for the GZDoom engine (more details can be found in the pinned comment on this video).
To date, this is my largest collection of songs (18!) that I've put out in a single release! The length of the soundtrack is actually half as long as it is here. I decided to have each track loop at least once before fading out, mostly for the sake of everyone's listening pleasure!
Its been a very fun and interesting experience composing my first all-MIDI soundtrack! I've found that I compose and write quite a bit differently compared to my usual style when writing with a guitar in my lap. Not having to worry about all the usual things (like VST plugins, EQ, mixing, mastering, etc.), I was able to just solely focus on writing music! Working within the constraints of General MIDI and GZDoom's default soundfont (gzdoom.sf2) really has been a case of "less is more".
As the name suggests, this soundtrack is still FAR from finished! I just figured that with 18 MIDIs created so far for the project, now would be a good time to release a part 1 or VOLUME 1 of sorts.
The soundtrack will have quite a variety of songs (to go along with the varied styles of levels split among the 3 episodes). Some tracks are my own little extensions/renditions of Wolfenstein 3D tracks. Some tracks have a more techno/electronic theme (intended for use in the Astrostein-like moon levels of Episode 3). Some tracks trying to imitate Wolfenstein 3D (such as The Operator Shuffle). Then there are songs that try to keep things more orchestral in nature. Lastly, some tracks take a more rock/metal approach ("Chains for Veins", "Ending The Fight"). This balance of different styles is something I'm going to strive to keep as I continue composing for this project!

Such a fitting song for a level where youre being chased by a frequently teleporting Cyberdemon!
There wasnt too much that was changed for this one. I had thought about having things escalate further at the end by extending it and adding some heavy guitars. However, I felt like doing that wouldve changed up the atmosphere too much.
Instead, I focused on trying to make things sound a little creepier. For instance, I wound up replacing the harp from the original with a.... a whistling... xylophone?? I had been trying to find a sound that would be fitting as a replacement. I couldnt find anything for a while, then by total accident, I loaded up a xylophone sample. When it played through the effects-chain that I had already set up, it wound up sounding very different! I loved how creepy it sounded, as well as the added bonus of Xylophones arent supposed to whistle!. Just really adds to the spookiness of the track, I think!
The original made clever use of a piano and its volume controls in order to achieve this pulsing, pad synth sort of sound (like the part from 1:39-1:53 for example). I wound up loading up one of my favorite synths for this, and then recorded it after running it through some effects to glitch it out. I kept the synth playing on the left side, while the glitched recording played back on the right side, along with some heavy reverb.
The main and most noticeable addition to this track would be the newly added choir parts towards the end. Adding some choirs is always a great go-to choice for complementing a very spooky and ominous atmosphere! I felt it made for a nice addition to the last part of this track. I also added some subtle french horns to accompany the deep strings that play during this last bit as well.
Aside from that, theres just some other very small additions, like the occasional gong, bells, a synth quietly panning from left-to-right, and throwing in a creepy wind sound.
Now for some fun trivia, I had totally forgotten which level this was when I was recording. So, as I watched the screen-melt effect reveal a not-so-friendly Cyberdemon, I was genuinely startled!

I had always thought that this song had such a familiar vibe about it. Then it all clicked when I found out it was based on a Genesis track!
To pay homage to the original Genesis tune, I tried imitating the synths a little bit. I also decided to dip the guitars in a nice amount of chorus.
Speaking of which, I finally decided to try out a new chorus effect. An emulation of the chorus effect from the Roland Juno synths (if I remember right). I also decided to try out another free retro synth. I was looking for a particular-sounding retro synth-string, and I certainly found it!
This track was absolutely ripe for noodling around and making up lead parts! I had a blast recording the leads. Especially because I also got to screw in the whammy bar for this and smacked that thing around!

So recently, Raees, a longtime subscriber of the channel here asked if I could compose something for his WolfenDoom project.
By the following evening, I already wrapped up work on this track! I really enjoyed putting this one together. Its nice being able to work on something other than the usual heavy guitars every once in a while (especially when trying to work through another creative block).
I highly recommend you guys check out this mod and give Raees some feedback! This also wont be the only track I compose for this either. I do plan on creating more tracks for levels and boss encounters =)!

Shoutout to Raees and the Wolfenstein Rising project (links down below)!
So this one came about after Raees had asked if I could try making a more hyped up and/or punchier version of Plodding.
I wound up bumping up the tempo from ~92bpm to 104bpm in order to liven things up a little bit. I tried to be as faithful as I could when it came to the instrumentation (at least as much as one could within the confines of General MIDI samples).
For the first loop, I kept things very close to the original, with only a few minor additions and adjustments. Starting on the 2nd loop, I decided to spruce things up a bit with a new piano part. Sounded nice and felt pretty in line with the piano parts Ive made up for the WR soundtrack so far. Then on the 3rd and final loop, I decided to get all jazzy with the horns!
Always nice to make more things for Wolfenstein Rising, and also nice to finally do something from the Mac soundtrack of Wolf3D! Anyways, hope you all enjoy this new addition to the Wolfenstein Rising Soundtrack! ~DAR

Another entry into the Subscriber Appreciation Event of 2021! Big shoutout and many thanks goes out to Megalith for requesting this rockin track!
I really had a blast playing this one! As always, I tried to stick close to the original. I did make some new additions though, such as a different tapping part to accompany the original melody during the chorus (0:16). I really love how this turned out, the leads during that bit just feel really dazzling (to me anyways).
I also threw in some new leads after the chorus (0:31). At one point, I was actually going to cut it, but decided against it since it sounded weird to have the tapped leads fade after the chorus. Also, its rather subtle, but in this bit I also had some clean and funky Strat chords playing!
As for the solos... man, this was SO rock n roll m/! Double tapping, bends, and just flashy! I really had a lot of fun recording these solos! I was actually kind of worried at first whether Id be able to pull it off or not.
Also, the main tapping bit that you hear from the start of the cover was pretty tricky. It took me a little bit to finally get it right.
Anyhow, as for other changes/additions that Ive made... Oh yeah, when the bass and rhythm guitars first kick in (0:09), I changed things up slightly. I literally just added two more notes since this change sounded even more rock n roll!
I also changed up the way I played the very end of the 2nd solo. I thought that this little harmony sounded cool and somewhat fitting since the song is nearing its end.
That and the addition of an outro/ending, I also added my usual gongs and misc percussion for dramatic effect.

At long last, the Plutonia Marathon is complete! It is truly the end of an era here on the channel. We embarked on this grand marathon in July of 2018, and now after six years, were finally here!
Thank you all so much for your patience, and for all the kind comments and support over these years! As per tradition, lets fondly look back at all the videos and their respective comments! Also apologies if I missed anyone, I tried my best to try and get everybody in here.
Theres quite a lot going on in this one. I did wind up changing the acoustic part a bit, but maintained the original bit via some pizzicato strings. Also threw in some choir on top of the string section, which kinda gave me some E1M8 vibes. Thus, I couldnt resist the urge to throw in E1M8s bends, since it just felt so right here.
I also got to record my actual violin for the first time in a couple of years (or however long ago its been since I did MAP03 from JPCP). I was eyeballing the MIDI and thought, Huh, I think I could probably try and play that...
Things were sounding really rough though, since I havent had the time to pick up and practice the violin since the last time it made an appearance here on the channel. However, after being stubborn as hell about wanting an actual violin recorded, I eventually got a take recorded.
I was prepared to scrap it since I wasnt too sure of the tone, microphone placement, as well as my performance. That and it was during the evening of July 4th, so fireworks and firecrackers were all popping off. To my surprise though, everything turned out alright! I was very happy that all the time I had spent trying to play that bit was worth it in the end.
Really liked this part since it felt like an old west, cowboy DoomGuy riding off into the sunset. Rather fitting for where were at in the marathon! Wanting to lean in on this vibe, I threw in some trumpets and even an accordion to accompany the violin.
Doing all this didnt come without a price to pay though, I wound up injuring my elbow and wrist a bit. Totally poor posture and improper technique on my part! Shouldve been more careful about that... So I was pretty much out of commission the next day (recording-wise), took a couple of aspirins and went about my usual business.
After a day of rest, I had to very carefully record the leads, since my wrist was still a bit sore. Was worried that my noodling and lead work would suffer from feelin handicapped with my wrist. Thankfully, I was able to noodle to my hearts content, without aggravating any of the prior days soreness!
That aside, the new shiny toy of darkness (man, this 7-string is SO black), got to shine not only in the expected chugga-chugga duties, but I quite enjoyed the clean tone I got out of it! I just sort of started playing something, and then came up with a harmonized part to throw over on to the opposite side of the stereo field.
Also, I was a bit worried about how my acoustic would sound, since I wasnt too confident in my mic placement. But just like the violin, I was pleasantly surprised when I started mixing the double-tracked takes I did for the acoustic!

Man, I was so very close to picking the Rooftop/Chopper Chase song. Though once I realized that quite a few other people had done their own take on that track, I kind of wanted to go and comb through the soundtrack once more.
I had picked out a handful that I really liked and thought that I could work with. In particular, this song really stood out to me... the only problem was that all I had to work with is basically the part you hear from 0:00-0:20. I loved how heavy this track sounded, but not having a lot to go off of was pretty tricky.
Its really a shame how well probably never get to hear the original full-length soundtrack (as well as in HD). Whoever was in charge of development must have decided to chop up all the songs into short loops and compress the hell outta them so that theyd fit on an N64 cartridge... which, yeah, I can understand that... but those chopped and compressed versions wound up being used for the other ports as well!
Going into this, I really wanted to try and faithfully make this heavy track whole again. I tried my best to imagine what a full version would sound like. The fact that Tommy Tallarico (the original composer) had released 3 of the tracks in their entirety a few years back had really helped my imagination! Also, if I remember correctly, I dont think he can legally release the rest of the soundtrack due to the mess of the publishing rights being kinda stuck in limbo.
Anyhow, it felt very nice to just rock out to a rhythmically-focused track, rather than the usual melodic stuff. Theres a few leads here and there, but this is mainly a ride through chug city (vigorous nodding and headbanging is mandatory!).
Also, rather than fiddling around with recreating that looped synth thats heard throughout the song, I sampled the original! I wanted to see if I could manage to work with it, despite it being very compressed. After messing with EQ, Reverb, and a few other things, I think I managed to make it not sound so lo-fi anymore!
I had a bit of fun with automating the flanger effect heard on the green guitar parts in the video as well. I also changed up my drum samples for this one. I kept my usual crash and ride cymbals, but swapped out the kick and snare (also added another electronic-sounding hi-hat too).
I really messed around a bit with the snare in particular. For once, I wanted/needed to have a snare that had more of a ring to it. I went over a bunch of my snare samples, and finally found one that I could sort of work with. I wound up using some EQ to try and bring out a little bit of its ringing frequency (which was somewhere in the 300hz range, I think). While it sounds nowhere close to the originals, I think the snare managed to do its job well!
I had really enjoyed being able to revisit this game after all these years. As much as I loved and played the crap out of Spider-Man 2, this particular game will always hold a special and nostalgic place in my heart. I also really do think that the short snippets of Mr. Tallaricos compositions heard throughout the game really has a lot to do with that!
Anyways, fans of the web-head rejoice, this channel finally has its second Spidey cover!... and its another pretty metal one to boot! Very happy to see Spidey win back in SlaughterMania I.

Man, it feels great coming back to do the guitar dance once again here on this covers channel. Ive been gone for far too long, but I think this break was exactly what I needed. Im feeling refreshed and hyped to churn out more jams!
Before I get into my usual details about this current cover, I just want to say that, no, I did not forget about Space Manbow... nor have I completely abandoned it. I dont know why, but for some reason, something just hasnt been meshing well. I DO plan to do it eventually, but for the time being, its time to play catch-up!
So originally, I never planned on having any synths in this cover. I had planned for the opening to be more orchestral, and have an almost kind of Middle-Eastern sound. However, unable to figure out how to properly achieve that, I started playing with SQ8L and some other synths. At this point, rather than really focusing on trying to be super faithful to the original, I just REALLY wanted to rock and jam out to my hearts content (regardless of accuracy)!
Also, this cover marks the first time Ive ever used the synth toms from the Roland SoundCanvas General MIDI soundfont. I think with everything going on in this cover, the normal toms got overwhelmed most of the time. Since I had already went with this synth/rock sort of sound, I figured that the (usually) cheesy-sounding synth toms would be great for layering on top of the normal toms. I definitely hope to use these toms more often in my future works!
Oh also, a bit of a disclaimer, the Strat wasnt used for the actual audio recording. I decided to bust out the Strat again since I think it makes differentiating the parts in the video a bit easier. Plus, its more eye-candy for the video too!
