Man, I was so very close to picking the "Rooftop/Chopper Chase" song. Though once I realized that quite a few other people had done their own take on that track, I kind of wanted to go and comb through the soundtrack once more.
I had picked out a handful that I really liked and thought that I could work with. In particular, this song really stood out to me... the only problem was that all I had to work with is basically the part you hear from 0:00-0:20. I loved how heavy this track sounded, but not having a lot to go off of was pretty tricky.
It's really a shame how we'll probably never get to hear the original full-length soundtrack (as well as in HD). Whoever was in charge of development must have decided to chop up all the songs into short loops and compress the hell outta them so that they'd fit on an N64 cartridge... which, yeah, I can understand that... but those chopped and compressed versions wound up being used for the other ports as well!
Going into this, I really wanted to try and faithfully make this heavy track whole again. I tried my best to imagine what a full version would sound like. The fact that Tommy Tallarico (the original composer) had released 3 of the tracks in their entirety a few years back had really helped my imagination! Also, if I remember correctly, I don't think he can legally release the rest of the soundtrack due to the mess of the publishing rights being kinda stuck in limbo.
Anyhow, it felt very nice to just rock out to a rhythmically-focused track, rather than the usual melodic stuff. There's a few leads here and there, but this is mainly a ride through chug city (vigorous nodding and headbanging is mandatory!).
Also, rather than fiddling around with recreating that looped synth that's heard throughout the song, I sampled the original! I wanted to see if I could manage to work with it, despite it being very compressed. After messing with EQ, Reverb, and a few other things, I think I managed to make it not sound so lo-fi anymore!
I had a bit of fun with automating the flanger effect heard on the "green" guitar parts in the video as well. I also changed up my drum samples for this one. I kept my usual crash and ride cymbals, but swapped out the kick and snare (also added another "electronic"-sounding hi-hat too).
I really messed around a bit with the snare in particular. For once, I wanted/needed to have a snare that had more of a "ring" to it. I went over a bunch of my snare samples, and finally found one that I could sort of work with. I wound up using some EQ to try and bring out a little bit of its ringing frequency (which was somewhere in the 300hz range, I think). While it sounds nowhere close to the original's, I think the snare managed to do its job well!
I had really enjoyed being able to revisit this game after all these years. As much as I loved and played the crap out of Spider-Man 2, this particular game will always hold a special and nostalgic place in my heart. I also really do think that the short snippets of Mr. Tallarico's compositions heard throughout the game really has a lot to do with that!
Anyways, fans of the web-head rejoice, this channel finally has its second Spidey cover!... and its another pretty metal one to boot! Very happy to see Spidey win back in SlaughterMania I.

Man, it feels great coming back to do the guitar dance once again here on this covers channel. Ive been gone for far too long, but I think this break was exactly what I needed. Im feeling refreshed and hyped to churn out more jams!
Before I get into my usual details about this current cover, I just want to say that, no, I did not forget about Space Manbow... nor have I completely abandoned it. I dont know why, but for some reason, something just hasnt been meshing well. I DO plan to do it eventually, but for the time being, its time to play catch-up!
So originally, I never planned on having any synths in this cover. I had planned for the opening to be more orchestral, and have an almost kind of Middle-Eastern sound. However, unable to figure out how to properly achieve that, I started playing with SQ8L and some other synths. At this point, rather than really focusing on trying to be super faithful to the original, I just REALLY wanted to rock and jam out to my hearts content (regardless of accuracy)!
Also, this cover marks the first time Ive ever used the synth toms from the Roland SoundCanvas General MIDI soundfont. I think with everything going on in this cover, the normal toms got overwhelmed most of the time. Since I had already went with this synth/rock sort of sound, I figured that the (usually) cheesy-sounding synth toms would be great for layering on top of the normal toms. I definitely hope to use these toms more often in my future works!
Oh also, a bit of a disclaimer, the Strat wasnt used for the actual audio recording. I decided to bust out the Strat again since I think it makes differentiating the parts in the video a bit easier. Plus, its more eye-candy for the video too!

Man, this was real fun to make. I really wanted to stick very close to the original on this one. I also did my best to try and imitate the synths from the original. I was going to do one of the synth parts with the guitar, but it just didnt sound quite right. In the end, I decided to save the lead guitar for the final stretch of the song.
I did however, make some other little additions. I made up the guitar part around 0:26-0:58 because I couldnt quite tell what the guitar was doing in the background of the original. I also made up new/different piano parts as well. I also added in a calm little interlude as well (3:25).
As for the video, my footage of the Glas Ghaibhleann boss fight got mostly borked. So I had to improvise and shot some more footage elsewhere. I decided to go off and do a couple of my favorite pastimes in Mab: Running Rabbie and Ciar Dungeons. Also at some point the video seems to have become about a boy and his bear wrecking everything, but anyways...

Really loved working on this one! This really made me think back to when I did my E2M6 cover back during the DOOM 1 Marathon. Most likely those sinister (pun sorta intended?) guitar harmonies is what made me think of it. Just felt rather nostalgic throughout the whole process!
I followed the original for the most part, but sorta extended things and injected some of my own original bits starting at 2:34.
Bit of influence from my song Fever Dream, as well as some RED PLANET influence in this new segment. Noodling around and making the solo was also pretty fun.
The solo is actually a blend of both my Ibanez and my Strat. This happened since I had originally wanted it to just be the Strat doing the leads, but I decided I liked the tone of my Ibanez more for this. So, rather than scrapping the Strat solo I recorded, I lightly blended it under the new re-recorded solo that I did on the Ibanez.
On the subject of rhythm guitars, it feels like its been forever since I last did a pick slide/scrape!
Im also pretty happy about the new technique Ive been using to mix my bass guitar now. Really sits well in the mix, while also managing not to get completely buried under the rhythm guitar.
Got one mixer track going down the center, my normal bass signal-chain that Ive used for years now. Then Ive also got a very very quiet distorted track that I carefully blend in. Lastly, I have another mixer track that is quite similar to my normal signal-chain, except I take the cabinet-sim out of the chain and throw in a flanger/chorus instead. This track manages to give the bass a bit more mid-presence. In particular, around the 785hz-800hz range where I slightly dip the EQs for both the rhythm and lead guitars. The chorus effect on that track also helps fill and round the sound out more too.
Technical audio rambling stuff aside, I LOVE the bassline in this song. It just felt so satisfying to play!
As for other little details, I added some gongs for dramatic effect. You can almost never go wrong with gongs, man. Its like, a crash cymbal... but bigger and thus more epic. Also, I threw in a subtle tom roll at the very end since it just felt right.
Speaking of toms, after all this time, Ive realized that Ive had my gain-staging all goofed in my signal-chain for the toms! It had been a mystery to me for a while now. I would wonder why Id have a hard time getting my toms to sound right. Turns out that I had the signal coming out too hot out of my multi-band compressor. That loud signal then fed into the compressor/saturator that was next in line, and wound up making the toms sound rather overly-aggressive at times. After a slap to the forehead and pulling down faders in the multi-band compressor, all was well again!
Before wrapping things up here, just wanted to apologize since this honestly shouldve been out like 3 days earlier. I was totally prepared for video-day/the-guitar-dance, however I had a bout of bad luck. Got sick from my instant coffee, which I never had a problem with before (maybe something in it went bad?). I had also wound up pulling something in my left-shoulder the day prior to that. Needless to say, I decided to recharge for those 3 days. Alls good now of course, felt 100% again when recording this video.
Anyways, hope you all enjoy this excellent jam, and hope you all look forward to D64D2s MAP21 up next! That one has some serious Legion of the Lost vibes about it, so Im certainly excited about starting audio-work on it here soon! ~DAR

Time to get gritty and industrial for this tune.
So this one was pretty interesting to tackle. First thing I did right off the bat was stare at the MIDI channel/track titled 8 string and went Hahaha oh no!
However, it was about time that I finally got to test out one of a several ideas Ive had for faking an 8-string. In the interest of saving time, I decided to try the simplest of my ideas... recording it all with my bass. Yep, thats right, all the guitars in this is actually me running my bass through my guitar signal-chain. I wound up tweaking a few things on my amp sim, but other than that, the rest of the signal-chain was the same as my normal one.
Now, just straight up strumming power chords on the bass was going to sound awful. So, knowing this, I decided to record the chords one note at a time. After quad-tracking the guitar parts, I went and spread them out. The root and its octave taking up the left side, and the 5th and its octave taking up the right.
Pretty happy with how this fake-8-string turned out. But man, my bass was noisy as hell. However, I wound up heavily chopping up the starts and ends of the notes, so the noise really wasnt much of a problem.
Eventually at some point, I finally had an idea for how I wanted this track to sound. I wanted it to sound really gritty and ugly (but like, in a good way!). Cue lots and lots of distortion on everything! It started with the guitar parts, but then quickly spread to nearly every other element in the mix. I especially love what the added distortion did for the kick and snare, it really gave them some balls!
Only thing that I think was spared from distortion hell was my shaker sample... which, fun fact; I went and chopped up and repurposed the shakers that I had recorded for my Watch Your Rock cover. Thats right, the (near-empty) bag of alfalfa seeds strikes again!
Also, with everything going on, it may not be as apparent, but I changed up my bass tone. I was messing around with something else and I wound up trying out a different bass amp sim. Definitely going to be sticking with this new amp sim!
Overall, Im pretty happy with how this turned out. I think I managed to stay really close to the original. That, and Im satisfied with how my fake-8-string experiment turned out. Its something that Ive messed with on and off for at least two years now. Its nice finally being able to put it to the test and use it for something here on the channel!

Meanwhile, as this channels very own Dark Wizard awaits the return of DAR and the COVER BATTLEGROUNDS... a couple of potentially troublesome guests pay him a visit. MailGuy also comes to deliver a very important message.
So, I had a lot of fun goofing around with this. I always love being able to voice both Drew and MailGuy whenever the opportunity arises!
Ive had the idea for this skit for like over a year now. After having my ear talked off by a couple of Jehovahs Witnesses as I did routine maintenance on my car... the idea quickly popped into my head shortly after they finally left.
I thought itd be hilarious to have DSparils remaining disciples going around door-to-door trying to get folks to worship their now long-dead Serpent Rider god (well not dead technically, according to lore from the Hexen II expansion).
For a while, I hadnt quite worked out how Id introduce these door-to-door disciples. However, recently, with COVER BATTLEGROUNDS V coming ever closer, I finally had an idea for this short skit!
Anyways, I hope you all get a chuckle out of this, I also hope you are all feeling hyped for COVER BATTLEGROUNDS V! The proper announcement video and the start of the voting-period will be coming very soon.
Also, fun fact (before I totally forget how I had come up with the name Dreutinaz): Drews name came to be one day when I was trying to think of a name for the then new Master of SlaughterSphere. I forgot how exactly I came across it, but I stumbled upon Druhtinaz an old Proto-Germanic word meaning a military leader, warlord, or something to that effect. I took a liking to it and then wound up realizing later that I had mispronounced it. However, I stuck with my mispronunciation since I could easily refer to him as just Drew.... Thus the mispelling, Dreutinaz came to be! ~DAR

Another entry to the Subscriber Event! Shoutout and thanks goes out to longtime subscriber: 6usfsd adsfe, for suggesting this song during the event.
Apologies for how long this took to get out, I seriously needed a nice break after that Infinite Sky cover! Because of that, I wound up sitting on this one for way longer than I should have.
I was unsure about this one since I wound up deviating a bit from the originals more subdued energy. Originally, I was going to follow this very closely, but I wound up really liking how my double-tapped part came out. After the tapping shenanigans, I decided at that point that Id go for this electronic rock kind of sound. I also had a tricky time trying to figure out what to do with my rhythm-guitar tracks... all was good though after I ran them through a gated filter!
For a while, I was trying to think of what was missing during the choir parts. When I finally sat back down to finish this, I decided to try throwing in some strings. I felt like this addition layered underneath the choirs gave things more impact, and made it sound a bit more grand.
Other than all that, I went back and referenced how I got certain sounds for my previous Metroid cover. Also, as simple as it was, I quite enjoyed making the heartbeat sound. Past the intro, I wound up also using the heartbeat in other spots (for dramatic effect!).
