Time to get gritty and industrial for this tune.
So this one was pretty interesting to tackle. First thing I did right off the bat was stare at the MIDI channel/track titled "8 string" and went "Hahaha--oh no!"
However, it was about time that I finally got to test out one of a several ideas I've had for faking an 8-string. In the interest of saving time, I decided to try the simplest of my ideas... recording it all with my bass. Yep, that's right, all the guitars in this is actually me running my bass through my guitar signal-chain. I wound up tweaking a few things on my amp sim, but other than that, the rest of the signal-chain was the same as my normal one.
Now, just straight up strumming power chords on the bass was going to sound awful. So, knowing this, I decided to record the chords one note at a time. After quad-tracking the guitar parts, I went and spread them out. The root and its octave taking up the left side, and the 5th and its octave taking up the right.
Pretty happy with how this "fake-8-string" turned out. But man, my bass was noisy as hell. However, I wound up heavily chopping up the starts and ends of the notes, so the noise really wasn't much of a problem.
Eventually at some point, I finally had an idea for how I wanted this track to sound. I wanted it to sound really gritty and ugly (but like, in a good way!). Cue lots and lots of distortion on everything! It started with the guitar parts, but then quickly spread to nearly every other element in the mix. I especially love what the added distortion did for the kick and snare, it really gave them some balls!
Only thing that I think was spared from distortion hell was my shaker sample... which, fun fact; I went and chopped up and repurposed the shakers that I had recorded for my "Watch Your Rock" cover. That's right, the (near-empty) bag of alfalfa seeds strikes again!
Also, with everything going on, it may not be as apparent, but I changed up my bass tone. I was messing around with something else and I wound up trying out a different bass amp sim. Definitely going to be sticking with this new amp sim!
Overall, I'm pretty happy with how this turned out. I think I managed to stay really close to the original. That, and I'm satisfied with how my fake-8-string experiment turned out. Its something that I've messed with on and off for at least two years now. Its nice finally being able to put it to the test and use it for something here on the channel!

Meanwhile, as this channels very own Dark Wizard awaits the return of DAR and the COVER BATTLEGROUNDS... a couple of potentially troublesome guests pay him a visit. MailGuy also comes to deliver a very important message.
So, I had a lot of fun goofing around with this. I always love being able to voice both Drew and MailGuy whenever the opportunity arises!
Ive had the idea for this skit for like over a year now. After having my ear talked off by a couple of Jehovahs Witnesses as I did routine maintenance on my car... the idea quickly popped into my head shortly after they finally left.
I thought itd be hilarious to have DSparils remaining disciples going around door-to-door trying to get folks to worship their now long-dead Serpent Rider god (well not dead technically, according to lore from the Hexen II expansion).
For a while, I hadnt quite worked out how Id introduce these door-to-door disciples. However, recently, with COVER BATTLEGROUNDS V coming ever closer, I finally had an idea for this short skit!
Anyways, I hope you all get a chuckle out of this, I also hope you are all feeling hyped for COVER BATTLEGROUNDS V! The proper announcement video and the start of the voting-period will be coming very soon.
Also, fun fact (before I totally forget how I had come up with the name Dreutinaz): Drews name came to be one day when I was trying to think of a name for the then new Master of SlaughterSphere. I forgot how exactly I came across it, but I stumbled upon Druhtinaz an old Proto-Germanic word meaning a military leader, warlord, or something to that effect. I took a liking to it and then wound up realizing later that I had mispronounced it. However, I stuck with my mispronunciation since I could easily refer to him as just Drew.... Thus the mispelling, Dreutinaz came to be! ~DAR

Another entry to the Subscriber Event! Shoutout and thanks goes out to longtime subscriber: 6usfsd adsfe, for suggesting this song during the event.
Apologies for how long this took to get out, I seriously needed a nice break after that Infinite Sky cover! Because of that, I wound up sitting on this one for way longer than I should have.
I was unsure about this one since I wound up deviating a bit from the originals more subdued energy. Originally, I was going to follow this very closely, but I wound up really liking how my double-tapped part came out. After the tapping shenanigans, I decided at that point that Id go for this electronic rock kind of sound. I also had a tricky time trying to figure out what to do with my rhythm-guitar tracks... all was good though after I ran them through a gated filter!
For a while, I was trying to think of what was missing during the choir parts. When I finally sat back down to finish this, I decided to try throwing in some strings. I felt like this addition layered underneath the choirs gave things more impact, and made it sound a bit more grand.
Other than all that, I went back and referenced how I got certain sounds for my previous Metroid cover. Also, as simple as it was, I quite enjoyed making the heartbeat sound. Past the intro, I wound up also using the heartbeat in other spots (for dramatic effect!).

Shoutout and thanks goes out to Sraigius, for suggesting/requesting this one!
So this one took a while, mainly because I got stuck being picky with how I was layering all my orchestral bits and pieces. It wasnt so much about transposing as it was about texture. I had crazy amounts of layers and stuff loaded up for this one.
I tried to faithfully stick to the original, all up until the last 1/3 of the song. Until then, I added little things like those epic taiko and orchestral bass drums (for dramatic impact). I also made a slight alteration to some brass bits like at 1:13. Really liked the way the brass resolves in these parts.
As the song heads into its final stretch, I had finally come up with something special for this cover! I wanted to give a nod to Doom 64 here, so I threw in some power chords on the guitar, as well as adding some marcato and staccato violin and viola sections. In these new violin and viola parts, the melody is a bit of a play on the synth-harp bit from the Doom 64 theme. I wound up stacking things up and had some harmonies going in those parts, in order to really drive home that epic and heroic flair.
As for the video, rather than going with my original idea of just holding the ending text, I decided to get a little artsy. My idea being to try and cram in as much Doom as I could in the span of roughly 3 minutes. Parodied/recreated the box art for Doom 1, 2, 3, and PSX. RIP AND TEAR. Encounters with the bosses (even threw in the Mother Demon just for good measure there toward the end). I actually wanted to try and fit a whole lot more into this video, but had to cut and streamline some ideas in order to try and fit it all in this cover.
One idea that partially made it was having the two marines in dress blues turn out to actually be the Protagonist and his buddy from my Infinite Sky cover. Though due to trying to fit everything here, the only thing to go off of are the hair and eye colors of those two dressed-up marines.
All in all, Im glad I finally wrapped up this one, however were not done with this mini-marathon just yet! Weve still got the Credits & Demo song left to go.

And now its time for the wrap party for the marathon!
I had originally thought about trying to record some guitars for this one, but as I set up my layers, I decided to let the guitars sit this one out. Really like the texture and feel I was able to get here.
I particularly loved how the Moog-like synth sound I used for the bass turned out!
Also in keeping with the tradition of previous marathons, the times in the intermission screen are based on all the overall video runtime of this marathon. Then the level clear time is of course based on the length of this cover! PAR time is the length of the original MIDI.

Here it is, the surprise cover! Shoutout to King Vibe for suggesting earlier this year that I do a Demons Souls cover. I had intended to do this BEFORE the remake came out, but it wasnt until recently that I discovered it already came out last month!
Also, just want to give a bit of a disclaimer. Since Im more of the recording-type of artist rather than the drawing kind, a lot of the art here was heavily referenced, or just straight-up traced from the game. (Also, I still havent played a single Souls game...)
Anyhow, so originally I was going to try my hand at a metal rendition of the Tower Knight theme. However, I was curious, so I decided to go through the soundtrack. As soon as I heard the harpsichord from this song, I was hooked! I didnt know anything yet about this particular song, but I knew that Id really love to cover it!
I made sure to do my due diligence and had myself a crash course on Demons Souls lore (context is very important for musicians!). I really liked the tragic story surrounding Saint Astraea and her loyal knight, Garl Vinland. So when the time came, I decided to cover this song!
I wanted to do my best to follow the heavy and serious atmosphere of the original. I did quite a bit more layering than usual on this one too. One such example: the pizzicato strings are actually a combo of 3 different samples.
Speaking of which, in my head, I heard that melody as pizzicato strings. I figured this would be nice, since I would switch to normal strings as the song progressed.
Eventually, in my head, I worked out that this would be split into 4 sections. The beginning is a mixture of 8/4 and 7/4 phrasing (pretty much just following the original). Then the 2nd part introduces the guitar and some choirs. This is when the fuzzy image in my head really started to take shape!
During this 2nd part, I wanted to inject a bit of hopefulness into this sorrowful mood. I imagined Garl speaking his lines as he and the Player have a standoff at the narrow pass. As this part continues, it eventually starts to descend, signifying a breakdown of communication and along with it, any hope to peacefully resolve this conflict. Two steadfast warriors prepare to clash, neither willing nor able to back down.
Part 3 has the heavy guitars kick in. After a valiant effort to protect his maiden, Garl falls to the Slayer of Demons after a brief, but brutal duel.
Part 4 de-escalates back to the mood and feel of part 1 (also goes from 8/4 back to the mix of 8/4 & 7/4). With Garl dead, Astraea is completely vulnerable. I imagined the player slowly wading through the plagued water, preparing to claim Astraeas demon soul.
I really loved recording the guitars on this... hell, I really enjoyed working on everything in this as a whole!
After wrapping up audio work (aka: nodding vigorously to the beat and heavy guitars in part3), it was time to render the audio and start on the video. The standoff at the pass during part 2 felt so clear in my mind, I just couldnt stop thinking about it. So, to test the waters, I created the subtitle overlays for Garl, just to see if it would fit... it was spot on! From there, I started doodling, making the bits and pieces that I needed to animate.
I originally only planned for part 2 to be animated, but eventually I wanted to do the whole thing! If I was more experienced with drawing, I totally wouldve made a more proper animation (including a proper battle scene!). Fortunately, I was able to throw in some guitar-dance to fill the void of an absent fight-scene... I suppose we can all pretend this is like the part where an animation studio is fast approaching a deadline and also went over budget!
Anyways, I think this is a pretty good one to end the year on! Hope you all enjoy the cover, and I hope yall look forward to more covers in 2021! ~DAR

Through the hellFire and Flames! Im back, all!!
Hoo boy, this was a tough one for sure. Its been forever since I had such an energetic and noodly song!
Before I get into my usual overview and commentary, Ive got a bit of a hilarious story that happened while recording... Or rather something that happened at the end of my bass recording-session. So, where Id been keeping my bass, it had managed to build up a little bit of dust and some junk on the strings. I didnt really pay it any mind, and just got to recording and laying down the bass tracks.
Well, by the end of the session, I finally looked down at the pickguard and pickups, which were now occupied by many a dust bunny. All that playing and picking managed to knock all that dust and crud loose from the strings! First time, I think Ive EVER had that happened. Had myself a good laugh about it while cleaning up the pickguard.
Also, on the topic of bass, I decided to try something a bit different. Every once in a while, I get bitten by the tone bug, and this time, I got the urge to mess around with my signal-chains for processing the bass DIs.
I originally set off to try and get a clanky kind of modern metal bass tone, but instead I got a more (for a lack of better terms) honky and farty, punky sort of bass.
I also decided to sidechain my rhythm guitar bus to control an EQ curve that would boost the honk of the bass tone. So, whenever the rhy guitars were putting out signal, the bass would get a boost of honk and nastiness, to party it up with the rest of the rhythm section. Then, when the rhy guitars are tapering off, or are quiet, the EQ curve will automatically reel things back in to be less nasty.
I think Im definitely going to be making use of this new technique moving forward. I think it really helps the bass be a bit more present, and adds a certain spice to the mix.
Tone bug adventures aside, as always, I tried to keep close and true to the original. When things are this fast and energetic, theres usually not too much wiggle room left for me to put my own spin on things (at least, without drastically altering the spirit of the track). That said though, I did manage to make some small little additions in some of the lead parts.
I did however have to slow down one of the fast bits towards the later half (though, I think it worked out nicely). I also wound up having to lower some parts in the second-half down by an octave, as things got a bit too high up to play on the guitar. I did consider goofing with a pitch-shifter effect, but decided to just roll with doing it an octave lower. I also got a little sloppy and winged it for the final sweep/shred run, but it all goes by so fast that it hopefully isnt too apparent that I didnt quite get it note for note.
One other noticeable change that I did was during the bass solo bit before the final chorus. Rather than fade in the rhtyhm guitars, I decided to detune a chord running through the Metal Pad straight from the gzdoom soundfont. I forget which song or songs in the DOOM 2 soundtrack also used this sound, but I kept hearing it in my head whenever I got to listening to this part. Then I also slapped on some delay/reverb on it just for good measure and ambience!
