Is Donald Trump about to recognise Somaliland as an independent state? Since returning to office in 2025, speculation has grown that he may overturn decades of U.S. policy and acknowledge Somaliland’s sovereignty. Those in favour argue this would reward Somaliland’s 30 years of stability, democracy, and governance while giving Washington a vital strategic partner in the Horn of Africa. Certainly, with its six million people, functioning institutions, and the rapidly expanding port of Berbera backed by UAE investment, Somaliland sits on one of the world’s most critical shipping routes. Recognition could also counter China’s base in Djibouti, strengthen U.S. influence near the Gulf of Aden, and reshape regional geopolitics.
Yet the decision is far from straightforward. In this video, I look at why recognition could also arguably destabilise Somalia, where the fragile government struggles against al-Shabaab insurgents, and alarm African Union members, who fear a precedent for separatism. China, too, could respond by deepening ties with Mogadishu, while U.S. partners like Turkey, heavily invested in Somalia, might equally push back against the move. So far, Trump has said his administration is “looking into it,” raising Hargeisa’s hopes, even as the State Department maintains America still backs Somalia’s territorial integrity. Ultimately, the questions remain: will Trump finally recognise Somaliland? And, more compellingly, should he?
