Can Thailand defeat the brutal, decades-long conflict in its South? In spite of the country's global reputation for tourism and cultural heritage, a deep-rooted conflict endures in its Malay Muslim-majority provinces of Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat, claiming thousands of lives through bombings, assassinations, and guerrilla attacks. Here, we examine the historical origins of the unrest, from the legacy of the Pattani Sultanate to policies of assimilation and political marginalisation, and consider how groups like Barisan Revolusi Nasional (BRN) have used asymmetric warfare to challenge Bangkok’s authority.
The video also assesses Thailand’s evolving strategies, including military crackdowns, economic development initiatives, cultural concessions, and multiple rounds of peace negotiations facilitated by Malaysia. Defying these efforts, rising violence in 2025 has nevertheless raised serious questions about whether lasting peace is achievable. With grievances tied to identity, autonomy, governance, and security, the insurgency reveals why such localised, low-level conflicts are so difficult to resolve. Ultimately, the question remains as to whether meaningful autonomy can pave the way for stability, or whether entrenched distrust, fragmented insurgent factions, and fears over national unity will keep southern Thailand locked in one of the region's most persistent conflicts.
