Could tiny Bhutan rewrite global politics? As one of Asia’s smallest states, the landlocked kingdom sits at the centre of a major geopolitical fault line between India and China. Despite rarely making global headlines, the Bhutan–China border dispute, including the Doklam Plateau to the remote Himalayan valleys, has shaped South Asia's balance of power for decades. China’s territorial claims, India’s security concerns over the Siliguri Corridor, and Bhutan’s strategic balancing act between its powerful neighbours, have repeatedly pushed the region toward confrontation — most dramatically during the 2017 Doklam standoff. But things might be about to change.

In this video, we look in depth at the developments suggesting a potential turning point is at hand. The 2021 “Three-Step Roadmap”, discrete diplomatic engagement, and Bhutan’s gradual foreign-policy shift all signal a possible breakthrough in Bhutan–China negotiations. At the same time, warming interactions between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping also hint at a broader thaw in India–China relations, creating an opportunity for Bhutan to define its borders without destabilising the region. In the end, whether the final agreement includes Doklam, or sidesteps it, will offer vital clues about the future balance of power in the Himalayas, making Bhutan’s border settlement the litmus test of a new geopolitical order across Asia.
