Could Canada and Europe be laying the foundations for a new global power bloc? As relations between Canada and the United States deteriorate, Prime Minister Mark Carney is looking increasingly towards Europe. Canada and the European Union are already deepening their economic, political and security ties—and discussions are now turning towards an even closer strategic partnership.
In this video, I examine the dramatic deterioration in Canada-US relations, the history of Canada-EU cooperation, CETA, European defence cooperation and Carney's call for the world's middle powers to work together. Could Canada and Europe develop a relationship resembling EU membership in all but name? And could countries such as Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea eventually become part of a wider grouping capable of balancing the United States and China?
