Ergo Proxy is a gem from anime's best year of 2006, likely being overshadowed for top 10's everywhere for some of the greatest series of all time from that year (Death Note, Code Geass, Black Lagoon and more)! That doesn't mean the anime isn't worth watching, building a dark, cyberpunk, dystopian world full of philosophy and hidden meaning, with plenty of psychological scenes; there's a lot to analyze. It could be loosely described as a mix of Psycho-Pass and Serial Experiments Lain. While at times needing a plot explanation, Ergo Proxy tackles an ever present question; why are we here? Why were we created? In the anime's world, some exist with a defined purpose like those in Romdeau; they're literally created, born mechanically with a purpose and to fill a hole in society. There's those in the commune who exist having cast off that purpose and now live on Romdeau's scrap. And within those sects and more we find specific character who exemplify the philosophy even more, like Iggy and Daedalus who are forced to confront their very reasons for being, much like Re-L and Vincent are later. Together these characters like Iggy, Vincent, and Re-L come together to continually add layers to an exploration of why we exist, as the greatest "man vs creator" story plays out before us in Ergo Proxy's plot.
