The Sorites Paradox (sand heap paradox) is a seemingly simple discussion from ancient Greek philosophy. We agree that there is a heap of sand before us, and that removing one grain will fail to make a heap into a non-heap. From that alone, we are trapped in the Sorites Paradox. The natural consequence of these two logical, agreed upon facts, is stating that a single grain of sand is a heap, since at each stage removing one at a time fails to change its state. This philosophical paradox is an issue of language, or more precisely, human perception. Unable to define things exactly, we rely on loose, vague terms, putting form to feeling in order to justify our decisions with false logic. With this in mind, do we truly know where any terms begin and end? Do we know where a human ceases to be so?
This video essay will analyze three anime, Jin-Roh, Shadow’s House, and From the New World to explain the sand heap paradox with regards to the human definition, and how our vague terms are more about results than truth.
Jin-Roh, a movie from the mind of Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell) explains the methodology of the paradox applied to humans, discussing how two similar individuals, Fuse and Kei, wind up in totally different situations due to how much of their humanity is removed at once. Kei is a revolutionary because her humanity was wiped away in seconds, while Fuse is a soldier because his was trained away slowly; grain by grain, he never noticed until it was too late.
Shadow’s House follows two groups, the shadows like Kate, a privileged, faceless class who have “living dolls,” like Emilico as servants, humans who clean their soot and act as their faces, quite literally serving as the shadow’s expression. Analyzing the anime shows that by allowing a human the goal of most human traits, like the desire to be important and have purpose, you can prevent them from ever seeking out or caring for the actual human qualities directly. Emilico and the humans serve as the expression of humanity for Kate and the shadows, but since they still feel the expression of humanity they don’t care it isn’t in their own name.
From the New World is a lesser known, but fantastic anime entirely about the human definition, or more precisely, it explains how the definition, a vague thing, is never about truth but rather results. We define ourselves as that which we wish to be, not that which we are, as that which allows us to take the actions we already wanted to, not that which is accurate. It follows a group of humans (notably Saki and Shun) with psychic powers and how they came to be inhuman while still calling themselves such, and the horrors they inflicted on other creatures (like Squealer) due to this.
