What does it mean to grow up in the shadow of a legend? In the opening books of Homer's 'Odyssey'—often called the Telemachy—we meet a young man paralyzed by grief and a kingdom in decay. While the great Odysseus is lost to the sea, his son Telemachus must begin a journey of his own: the search for a father he has never known.
In this lecture, we explore why the first four books of the Odyssey are essential for understanding the classical ideal of Paideia (education).
