The concluding lecture on Lewis's Perelandra marks the decisive break from the template of Milton's Paradise Lost, and his turn towards the significance of an incarnated spiritual battle. Ransom himself is forced to fight the un-man, which allows for the creation of an earthly paradise and prepares Ransom for his return to Tellus and his battle against the forces that have created a modern day Tower of Babel.
We can note parallels both to Lewis's work The Silver Chair as well as to the transition between Dante's Inferno and Purgatorio. In the final few chapters, Lewis engages in something akin to theological speculation, drawing upon such concepts as theosis and perichoresis.
In any event, having served as Maleldil's instrument on Perelandra, Ransom will return to the earth (Thulcandra, in Lewis's fictional terms) for the third installment of the trilogy to take up the spiritual battle of his day, which is not on the battlefields of Europe but within the halls of the academy.
